It will be a long week for the Werder first-team. Head coach Florain Kohfeldt must put these days to good use before the tough test away at table-topping Bayern. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the team will have two sessions, where they will put in the groundwork. As Kohfeldt revealed, “In the first part of the week, it’s all about us and how we want to play and then, from Friday, we will start to prepare for the Bayern game.” The break in training on Thursday is designed to limit overtraining and to highlight this change in the team’s focus.

The Werder coach will be able to call upon Thomas Delaney, as the Dane returns to training after having recovered from his calf problem. Ishak Belfodil is also scheduled to be back in training on Tuesday afternoon. However, Ole Käuper will be absent from the closed training session due to illness.

Josh Sargent gained his call-up to first-team training. “I want to see more of him with us, to track his progression. He is an absolute top talent, which goes without saying, but we need to give him the right support. The first six months are an adjustment period for him,” explains Kohfeldt. He, along with his coaching staff, watched the U23 match against Stuttgart, in which Sargent scored his first goal in Werder colours. The head coach said, “He moves well, holds the ball well. But we must not forget that he has only just arrived in, what is for him, a new and foreign country.”
