The match began a little disjointed, with both teams giving the ball away cheaply. Luca Caldirola met a Florian Kainz free-kick with his head to put Werder into the lead in the 16th minute.  Just ten minutes later the Hammers were level, however, as ex-Werder man Marko Arnautovic equalised. It was the Londoners who had the better of the second half and got a deserved second through Martinez. However, Werder were not to be denied as Augustinsson set up Zhang who made it 2-2. Because of their 1-0 win in the first leg yesterday evening, this result was good enough for Werder to win the Betway Cup.

Line-up and formation: Alexander Nouri named a completely different eleven to yesterday's match and all eleven players played the full 90 minutes.

Caldirola and Arnautovic score after scrappy beginning

4' minute: Josh Cullen has the first shot of the match for the Hammers, but Thomas Delaney gets in a block.

9' minute: A cross from Arnautovic from the left hand side is cleared by Sané for a corner which causes no trouble.

16' minute: Werder score with their first real chance. Pedro Obiang fouls Bartels inside the West Ham half. Florian Kainz's free-kick is met by Luca Caldirola who heads home.

18' minute: Good chance for the Londoners. Arnautovic wins a tussle with Bauer and shoots, but Pavlenka saves. The follow-up from Snodgrass goes into the side netting.

25' minute: Equaliser for the Hammers. Masuaku crosses to the near post where Arnautovic is waiting and he puts it past Pavlenka. West Ham deserve to be level.

45' minute: A hard-fought friendly is all-square at half-time.

Hammers look good, Zhang equalises

50' minute: Edmilson Fernandes tries his luck from distance and hits the post.

59' minute: After a foul by Zabaleta on Augustinsson, Florian Kainz's free-kick hits the wall.

62' minute: West Ham United make eight changes. Only Marko Arnautovic, André Ayew and Joe Hart remain on the pitch.

72' minute: Declan Rice carries the ball into the Werder half and shoots, but misses.

74' minute: Augustinsson's cross is met by the head of Delaney, but still no goal.

75' minute: 2-1 to the Hammers. Arnautovic plays in Ayew who crosses under no challenge. Martinez beats Caldirola in the air and heads in.

81' minute: Augustinsson brings the ball down the left and crosses to the back post where Yuning Zhang is there to equalise for Werder.

Conclusion: A tightly contested friendly match ended all-square. The Londoners were the more aggressive of the two teams for long periods, but the Green-White defence limited the visitors to few obvious goalscoring opportunities. Werder weren't at their fluent best going forward, but still found two goals through Caldirola and Zhang. It was a fitting end to a good week of training.

Reaction

Alexander Nouri: "They were two matches which demanded that we played at a high level. We were able to show things which we'd been working on in training over the last few weeks. Defensively we were good and Florian Kainz did a reliable job defensively down the right hand side, in an unusual position for him. It was a good way to round off these two training camps. We can leave here now with a positive feeling after these two results.
