SV Werder Bremen won their first match of the 'Betway Cup' 1-0 against West Ham United.  To conclude their training camp in Schneverdingenm, the Green-Whites put in a good performance in front of 3,250 spectators. Werder looked solid at the back throughout, despite having some inexperienced players in the defence. The Green-Whites also looked very good in attack up to the edge of the box, where precision was lacking on occasions. Despite pressure from the Englishmen in the second half, Werder stood firm and earned a deserved victory.

Line-up and formation: Alexander Nouri went with a 3-5-2 formation against the Premier League side. The Werder head coach picked a youthful side which included 16-year-old Julian Rieckmann who was making his first team debut. The youngster was an important member of the back three and gave a good performance. Alexander Nouri had to do without the injured Niklas Moisander and Zlatko Junuzovic, whilst Robert Bauer was also unavailable because of a private appointment. Ex-Werder man Marko Arnautovic started on the bench for the Hammers.

Eggestein gives Werder early lead

4' min: Werder have the first chance. Theodor Gebre Selassie latches on to a long ball from inside the Werder half and moves into the West Ham penalty area, but he doesn't catch his shot right and it goes over Adrián's goal.

12' min: GOAL for Werder!
Ulisses Garcia picks out Gondorf from the left and he plays in  Johannes Eggestein who takes a shot early from inside the penalty area and tucks it in the bottom corner.

24' minute: Johannsson can't capitalise on the mistake by Collins. The USA international anticipated a short back-pass from Collins, but his shot causes Adrián no problems.

37' minute: Michael Zetterer's goal comes under threat. The ball in from Martinez is not met by anyone in the penalty area and that's the closest that the Hammers come in the first half.

43' minute: Some good combination play sees Johannsson play in Gondorf deep in the West Ham half. Gondorf in turn finds Schmidt, but the 19-year-old's shot is parried by Adrián.

45' minute: Half-time in Schneverdingen. The Green-Whites look comfortable on the ball and solid at the back. The Hammers had no chances of note in the first half. Werder look good in attack and have shown some neat combination play in midfield. Werder's best attack resulted in the goal which was scored by Johannes Eggestein in the twelfth minute.

West Ham press, but Werder stand firm

57' minute: Michael Zetterer is called into action for the first time and is alert to deny Declan Rice who wins an earial battle with Ulisses Garcia.

60' minute: West Ham head coach Slaven Bilic makes six substitutions, one of which involves ex-Werder player Marko Arnautovic coming on. Alexander Nouri leaves things as they are.

70' minute: The visitors from England, with lots of fresh legs, continue to put the Green-Whites under pressure and Werder offer nothing in attack.

79' minute:  Double chance for Werder as Aron Johannsson tries his luck from distance. The rebound falls to Niklas Schmidt who shoots at the keeper like Johannsson before him.

90' minute: Full-time in Schneverdingen. The Premier League outfit improved in the second half, but the young Werder Bremen side withstood the pressure and held on for a well-deserved victory. The second match in this double header is on Saturday (15:30 CEST) live on WERDER.TV and both teams are likely to make lots of changes.

Reaction

Alexander Nouri: "In friendlies the result isn't the most important thing. That was the case again today. We wanted to be compact defensively, do our jobs and work on our stability. We did that on the pitch today and we're very happy."

Frank Baumann:
"We wanted to be compact and not concede too many chances. That worked magnificently. Everyone worked well together and we used the ball well when we had it. It was also a test to see if all the players could go for 90 minutes. Everyone gave a good performance."
