It was the perfect end to a very good week of pre-season for FC St. Pauli as they recorded a 2-1 win over the Green-Whites and will head into their first match of the league season next week full of confidence. For SVW head coach Alexander Nouri, it was another game in which he learnt more about possible players and formations going into next season. Werder created few chances in the first half and went in 1-0 down at half-time thanks to Aziz Bouhaddouz's goal in the 22nd minute. It was again Bouhaddouz who struck in the second half for the second division side after Fin Bartels had equalised for Bremen in the 55th minute.

Line-up and formation: Werder head coach Alexander Nouri went with a 3-5-2 formation with goalkeeper Pavlenka protected by a back three of Veljkovic, Sané and Caldirola. Philipp Bargfrede played in holding midfield with Gondorf and Kainz just in front of him. Bauer and Garcia occupied the wing-back roles and Aron Jóhannsson partnered captain Max Kruse in attack.

Werder with too many mistakes as Bouhaddouz scores opener

4' minute: A cross from the left finds the head of Aziz Bouhaddouz, but the Morocco international can't get enough on the header to trouble Pavlenka.

8' minute: Aron Jóhannsson tries his luck from 20 yards out and stings the palms of the St. Pauli keeper who parries the ball away.

22' minute: Goal for St. Pauli. At the end of a fast breakaway Caldirola deosn't get close enough to Allagui who picks out his strike partner Bouhaddouz in the middle. The moroccan is allowed to run off Lamine Sané and finishes past Pavlenka.

32' minute: Caldirola meets Kainz's free-kick with his head, but it lands tamely in the hands of the keeper.

41' Minute: Goalscorer Bouhaddouz tries to score directly from a free-kick from fully 25 yards, but his effort is too close to Pavlenka who saves comfortably.

45' minute: Half-time at Millerntor. The home side have a deserved lead through Bouhaddouz's strike. It is noticeable that the second division side are further on in their pre-season preparations than Alexander Nouri's men. Werder lack purpose in attack.

Bartels' goal not enough

46' minute: Werder make five changes for the second half. Maxi Eggestein, Theo Gebre Selassie, Ludwig Augustinsson, Thomas Delaney and Fin Bartels all come on.

49' minute: Bartels plays in Kainz but the Austrian's shot goes straight at Robin Himmelmann. At the other end, the Hamburgers almost make it 2-0, but the linesman's flag is raised.

55' minute: Goal for Werder! Kruse plays in Gebre Selassie down the right and the Czech cuts it back for Fin Bartels to fire home against his former club.

68' minute: Goal for St. Pauli. A free-kick is drifted in from the right-hand-side, near the half-way-line. The ball bobbles around in the penalty area before Bouhaddouz is on hand to blast it into the net for his second of the afternoon.

76' minute: Kainz's free-kick is headed away to the feet of Fin Bartels whose subsequent shot is blocked.

86' minute: Substitutions and fouls disrupt the rhythm of the match in the final few minutes. There are few clear cut chances for either side in the closing stages.

90' minute: Full-time in Hamburg. St. Pauli get a deserved 2-1 win.  Despite Werder scoring a very good goal, St. Pauli could have had more. The Green-Whites are still lacking sharpness in some key areas, but they should be able to find that over the next three weeks before the competitive season gets underway in Würzburg. The next friendly for Werder is due to be against West Ham United on Friday.

Reaction

Alexander Nouri: "We were lacking freshness today. You have to accept that after a hard week of intense training. But it was still a very good test for us which we can gain a lot from. We made too many mistakes on the ball. Pauli did very well to capitalise on our mistakes and attack dangerously."

Fin Bartels:
"In general we were too slow today. We played sideways too much and weren't purposeful enough going forward. Our tranisitonal play which is normally so strong wasn't very good today. You could see that some players had tired legs. But these mistakes will help us in the long run and we'll learn from them. What was important today was that we played a really good, competitive opponent today."
