Werder Bremen came second at the Telekom Cup. Following the semi-final win against Gladbach, the Green-Whites were defeated by the record champions from Munich 2-0 – a fair result. FCB were in control of the game, with Werder struggling to create much in attack. Thomas Müller gave Bayern the lead before Bernat doubled it shortly thereafter. Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer prevented a higher scoreline thanks to his penalty save. Prior to this game, Hoffenheim triumphed against Borussia on penalties in the third-place playoff.

Line-up and formation: Manager Alexander Nouri made just one change from the semi-final. Michael Zetterer was brought in at the goalkeeper position. Otherwise, everyone who started the semi-final against Gladbach started the game against Bayern.

The game

10th minute: Coman has a go from long range, but his shot is off target.

13th minute:Goal for FC Bayern. The  record champions take the lead. Müller’s shot deflects off the back of Caldirola, and the ball loops up and over into the back of the net.

34th minute:Goal for FC Bayern. Bernat plays a one-two with Müller, before the Spanish left-back makes it 2-0.

36th minute: Zetterer saves the penalty! Evina was judged to have been brought down by Delaney in the box, and Müller steps up to the spot. However, Werder’s goalkeeper is able to parry Müller’s shot, and then the 22-year-old reacts quickly to deny the Germany international once more.

45th minute: Full time. Werder played well in the tournament, but have been handed a loss to them by FC Bayern – and deservedly so.

Reaction and summary

Alexander Nouri: “Of course you want to win every game you play, but we played well in both of our games. We were well-organised. It was easy to see the way in which we wanted to play, but there’s still more room for improvement. We faced two tough tests against two very good teams.”
