In the last match before the summer break, holidays and the World Cup, the Green-Whites put on their boots one final time to close the season against a team made up of players from SV Ahlerstedt/Otterndorf and Heeslinger SC. A quick start set Werder up for the rest of the game, as Florian Kohfeldt’s men ran out comfortable 9-3 winners.

Formation: For the last game of the 2017/18 season, head coach Kohfeldt fielded some seasoned Bundesliga professionals, including Junuzovic, Gebre Selassie and Bauer, while also giving a chance to youngsters Thore Jacobsen and Johannes Eggestein to impress. On the bench sat Rashica, Kainz, Friedl, Moisander, Pavlenka and Idrissa Touré from the U23s.
The Green-Whites lined up in a 4-3-3 system, with Junuzovic, J. Eggestein and Zhang in attack. At the back, Bauer, Dominic Volkmer and Co. were tasked with assuring Jaroslav Droby had as little to do as possible.

Eggestein’s chipped finish opens the goal-fest

The highlights:

Minute 10: GOOAAL! 1-0 to Werder, Johannes Eggestein! On the left, SVW’s number 23 receives the ball into his path and after a good first touch and control, he bares down on goalkeeper Marvin Koch. The Werder youngster lifts the ball over him to open the scoring.

Minute 19: After almost 20 minutes, the hosts get into the Werder box for the first time. Salzen finds Nissen, but Werder’s offside trap works as planned.

Minute 20: GOOAAL! Yuning Zhang! The Chinese profits from a mistake in the hosts’ defence. Lurking on the edge of the opposition’s penalty box, he wins the ball and finishes past Koch.

Minute 25: GOOAAL! 3-0 to Werder, Robert Bauer this time! A lovely goal from the right-back. After a cross from J. Eggestein, the home defence clear, but only as far as Bauer, who steadies himself and fires the ball into the back of the net.

Minute 28: Goal. Carsten Dammann pulls one back. The hosts strike on the counter. Jannes Wulff is quicker to the ball than Dominic Volkmer and finds captain Dammann in the box with a perfect pass. All Dammann has to do is finish from close-range, which he does.

Minute 38: GOOAAL! Jérôme Gondorf makes it 4-1! After some fine passing, Gondorf finds himself alone in the box and restores the Green-Whites three-goal advantage.

Minute 45: GOOAAL! 5-1 to Werder, Yuning Zhang gets his second of the game! Shortly before the break, J Eggestein sends Thore Jacobsen through on the left, who puts a low cross into the box. It comes to Zhang, who finishes well.

Minute 45+1: The referee blows for half time in Ahlerstedt. Werder in control – 5-1 at half time.

Zhang’s bicycle kick stuns the spectators

Minute 52: Goal, Jannes Heins scores the hosts’ second goals of the game, which was deserved as they start the second half better than Werder. Heins finishes past Drobny from a fine cross, nothing the Czech 'keeper could have done.

Minute 54: GOOAAL! Zlatko Junuzovic! SVW with an immediate response. The captain actually intends on finding J. Eggestein with a cross, but the ball evades everyone, including the opposition goalkeeper, and it ends up sneeking in at the far post.

Minute 62: GOOAAL! 7-2 to the Green-Whites – Yuning Zhang gets his hat trick! And what a way to score his third. A Marco Friedl cross finds Zhang, who scores with an impressive bicycle kick.

Minute 74: Goal. Jannes Heins again. The striker profits from a misplaced pass from Drobny and finishes past the SVW number two at the second attempt.

Minute 78: Yuning Zhang is really up for it today. He dribbles past an opponent and is alone in front of goal, but this time he is thwarted by the hosts’ ‘keeper, who saves with his foot.

Minute 84: Werder hit the bar! Bargfrede rattles the bar with a shot with the outside of his boot. A shame for Bargi!

Minute 86: GOOAAL! 8-3 to Werder, Milot Rashica! Robert Bauer powers into the box and sets up the Kosovan, who fires the ball home.

Minute 88: GOOAAL! Johannes Eggestein nets Werder’s ninth! Werder win back the ball from the hosts’ kick-off and move the ball forward quickly. The last pass lands at J. Eggestein’s feet, who first started and now rounds off the scoring.

Minute 90: Full time. SVW head into the summer break on the back of a 9-3 win.

Summary: The hosts from Ahlerstedt, Otterndorf and Heeslingen played freely and caused the Green-White defence a few problems, particularly Jannes Heins, who scored a brace after coming on at the break. However, SVW showed why they were the favourites and took full advantage of the spaces left by the hosts. The spectators were treated to a very entertaining and fast-paced game, in which a number of Werder players got onto the scoresheet. Now it’s time for the Green-Whites to enjoy a well-deserved rest after a successful second half of the season.

Match reaction

Florian Kohfeldt: “Today’s game was a nice way to end the season. I saw some nice combination play and great goals. It was a super game for the spectators. We’re now all looking forward to the summer break, the players will now immediately start their holidays, while the coaching staff and I will meet for the final time tomorrow to round off our analysis. Then we’ll have a couple of quiet weeks which will be nice.”
