In another intensely fought friendly SV Werder went down 1-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Werder largely controlled the ball in the opening exchanges, but the better chances fell to the English second division side. However, the early part of the match went by without too many clear cut chances, with most of the action taking place in midfield as both teams made strong tackles. The Green-Whites found it difficult to break down a tight Wolves defence. Wolves went ahead early in the second half when a neat pass found Nouha Dicko who finished in the 49th minute. Along with a shot from distance, captain Zlatko Junuzovic had two more chances to equalise. His free-kick hit the crossbar and then his second struck the post. Most unfortunate. In the end, the match finished 1-0 to Wolves.

Line-up and formation: Werder head coach Alexander Nouri went with an attacking line-up against the English second division side. A back three, with five in midfield was designed to try and counteract the typically robust English style of play and make the midfield tight. Not long into the game, however, the Werder head coach decided to switch to a back four. From there the full-backs were given license to get forward and support the strikers.

Werder control the game, Wolves have the chances

Highlights:

6' minute: First sniff for Wolves. After Sané had shielded the ball from Cavaleiro, the pass from Verlaat is too short and Cavaleiro gains possession, bears down on Jiri Pavlenka, but shoots wide.

9' minute: Second chance for the Championship team. After a long ball, Matt Doherty forces Pavlenka to make his first save of the match. Directly afterwards, a header from Wolves' centre-back Willy Boly goes just over from a corner.

16' minute: Werder have their first chance. After some good play in midfield, Ulisses Garcia  has a shot from range, but it barely troubles Burgoyne who comfortably parries.

37' minute: Fin Bartels carries the ball for around 30 yards into the Wolves' half and is fouled by the English side's captain, Daniel Batth. The resulting free-kick from Max Kruse has too much on it for Robert Bauer.

Dicko finishes, Junuzovic strikes woodwork

49' minute: Michael Zyro charges down the right before finding Nouha Dicko, who in turn finds the bottom corner. Werder are 1-0 behind.

61' minute: Werder continue to press and Augustinsson tries his luck, but Ruddy has no trouble.

77' minute: The Werder captain swings in a corner which lands at the feet of Florian Kainz, but his shot goes over.

81' minute: Huge chance for Werder! The Green-Whites win a free-kick on the edge of the Wolves' penalty area. Captain Junuzovic steps up, curls it over the ball but onto the bar.

85' minute: Bauer hits a shot directly from Junuzovic's corner. A good attempt, but misses.

87' minute: Another free-kick attempt from Junuzovic. This time he hits the post! More bad luck for Werder!

Conclusion: After a bright start from Werder, they struggled to find a route to the Wolves goal. The Green-Whites put in a lot of tackles in midfield and matched the English side's intensity. Junuzovic and co. were more forceful in the second half but, despite two very good free-kick attempts, were unable to get the equaliser. Defensively, Nouri's men were largely solid. The next test will be on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Telekom Cup.

Nouri's reaction and match details

Alexander Nouri: "We're happy with the test, but not with the result. Our focus was on the defensive side of the game today and we gained some good knowledge. We look to adapt our game according to different set-ups and be flexible. We still need to work on that. We had to change our formation at the start of the game because we had expected Wolves to set up differently. That was good for us because we want to practise exactly that. Even though we would've liked a positive result, it was a good test. The result is secondary in this instance."
