Two set-pieces cost Werder Bremen and prevented them from taking at least a point from Matchday 4. A fast-paced, exciting 90 minutes in which Werder dominated many periods ended, however, in the Green-Whites going down 2-1 to FC Schalke 04. In front of 42,100 people inside the sold-out Weserstadion, Lamine Sané put the hosts into the lead (20th minute) but the equaliser came just two minutes later. Milos Veljkovic mistakenly headed the ball past his own ‘keeper from a Schalke corner (22’). Shortly beforehand, Max Kruse had to come off with a shoulder injury. Werder put the pressure on in the second half yet again but Leon Goretzka scored the winner from another corner (83’). And Bremen couldn’t come back from this late sucker-punch.

Line-up and formation: For the home game against Schalke, head coach Alexander Nouri went with an unchanged starting XI from the draw last weekend in Berlin. The defensive trio of Robert Bauer, Lamine Sané and Milos Veljkovic (from right to left) lined up in front of Jiri Pavlenka with Theodor Gebre Selassie (right) and Ludwig Augustinsson (left) on the wings. In the centre, Maximilian Eggestein was given the job of keeping Schalke’s German international Leon Goretzka quiet whilst captain Thomas Delaney and Florian Kainz occupied the attacking midfield positions and aimed to create chances for Max Kruse and Fin Bartels in attack.

The Green-Whites’ lead lasts just two minutes

19th minute: After an opening period in which Werder have been aggressive and had lots of possession, the side suffer a tough loss to their strike force. A heavy challenge from Schalke defender Thilo Kehrer leaves Max Kruse clutching his shoulder on the floor. New signing Ishak Belfodil replaces him in a like-for-like substitution.

20th minute: GOOOAAAAALLLL, 1-0 to Werder! Lamine Sané! Just minutes after the substitution, the Green-Whites take the lead. Augustinsson hits the post with a header from a Kainz corner, but Sané reacts quickest to smash the ball home from 12 yards out.

22nd minute: GOAL, 1-1. Milos Veljkovic (OG). Bremen are the masters of their own downfall through a peculiar own goal. After Konoplyanka’s corner, Kehrer heads the ball into the six-yard box where Sané and Veljkovic, under no Schalke pressure, both go for the same ball and the ball comes off Veljkovic’s head and flies past Pavlenka into the Werder net.

37th minute: Bartels plays it left to Augustinsson, whose cross is met by Kainz and he forces Schalke ‘keeper Ralf Fährmann into a reflex safe with a bullet header. Werder’s first big chance from open play. At the other end, Konoplyanka shoots just wide of the far post from distance.

45+3 minute: Half-time at the Weserstadion. Just moments before the whistle, Fährmann breathed a sigh of relief as Werder go close again after great play from Ishak Belfodil.

Werder put the pressure on, but Schalke score again

60th minute: Great play from the Green-Whites as Kainz plays Belfodil through who finds Bartels in a good position but he fires over from the edge of the area.

62nd minute: Naldo has no chance against Belfodil who takes the ball to the touchline and crosses it at pace into the six-yard box where Kainz is just inches away from latching onto it as Fährmann parries away.

71st minute: Belfodil, Bartels and Kainz combine again to give Werder three corners in quick succession. The final corner leads to a shot from the edge of the area which flies just over the bar.

83rd minute: GOAL, 2-1 to Schalke, Leon Goretzka. For the second time this afternoon, Werder concede from a corner. Caligiuri’s delivery is met by Goretzka and he scrapes home from close range.

90+4 minute: Referee Benjamin Brand brings an end to proceedings. Werder couldn’t come back from Schalke’s late winner.

Summary: The Green-Whites dominated possession in the opening stages but after Kruse was forced off with injury, the game became more even. Schalke were gifted an equaliser after Sané put Werder into the lead through Veljkovic’s own goal. Both teams played at a high tempo and very aggressively in the first half. The away side pressed high to force Werder into giving away possession in their own half. This didn’t cause a flurry of chances however as the defensive line reacted well and remained alert apart from at the two decisive set-pieces. It was a feast of attractive, exciting football for the crowd and this remained in the second half. SVW’s performance was courageous and convincing and new signing Ishak Belfodil was a key part of this performance. He was bright throughout, causing constant problems for the Schalke defence. Despite this the guests had the final word, with Werder left lacking in defence from a corner once again.
