SV Werder lost their first game of the new Bundesliga season against TSG Hoffenheim 1-0. After a goalless first half, the deciding goal came in the 84th minute as a shot from Andrej Kramaric deflected off Robert Bauer and into the net.

Line-up and formation: Alexander Nouri only made one change in the 3-5-2 formation that he set out for Werder’s DFB-Pokal win against Würzburger Kickers. Fin Bartels, who was banned for the cup game returned to the starting eleven and played up front alongside Max Kruse. New signing Jerome Gondorf was dropped to the bench to make way for Bartels. Milos Veljkovic, Lamine Sané and Robert Bauer played in the back line in front of Jiri Pavlenka, who was making his Bundesliga debut in goal. On the wings, Ludwig Augustinsson, also playing his first Bundesliga game, operated down the left and Theo Gebre Selassie played down the right. Thomas Delaney, Maximilian Eggestein and Florian Kainz, who was deployed up front against Würzburg, played behind the two strikers in the midfield.

Good performance from Werder - Just missing the finishing touches

1st minute - The new season is underway!

5th minute - First big chance for the hosts. Mark Uth puts Kerem Demirbay through but he fires over the goal from inside the area. The tempo is very high with both teams aggressively challenging for the ball.

27th minute: First good counter from the Green-Whites! After a TSG free-kick, Florian Kainz takes the ball into the opposition half with Max Kruse and Fin Bartels in support. Kainz passes to Kruse, who tries to play it back to him but the Hoffenheim defence can clear their lines.

29th minute: What a chance for Flo Kainz! Kruse’s shot is blocked and the ball runs to Bartels who crosses it for Kainz but the Austrian fires over the bar under pressure. The ball may not have counted however as Bartels was just offside. But, Werder have grown into the game in the last few minutes.

35th minute: SVW are getting closer to their first goal! Ludwig Augustinsson volleys a Kainz cross first time inside the penalty area but his shot is parried away by Oliver Baumann in the TSG goal for a corner.

Robert Bauer’s deflection wrong-foots Pavlenka

60th minute: Let off for Werder! Kerem Demirbay finds space after a one-two and shoots from 20 yards out.The shot deflects off Thomas Delaney and bounces off the crossbar onto the goal-line. No goal!

79th minute: Yet more pressure from Hoffenheim. The substitute Andrej Kramaric takes on four Werder players in the penalty area and passes to Steven Zuber, whose shot from the left only just flies wide of the far post.

84th minute: Goal for Hoffenheim! Kramaric scores with a deflected shot to put the hosts into the lead. His effort from distance hits Robert Bauer’s toro and flies past Pavlenka into the goal. So frustrating! Shortly before, Pavlenka saved a shot from Gnabry.

92nd minute: Final whistle in Sinsheim. SV Werder lose the season opener to TSG Hoffenheim 1-0.
