It didn’t look like it was going to happen and it’d been a long time coming but Werder Bremen have won the 108th Nordderby! Courtesy of an 86th minute Rick van Drongelen own goal, Werder took all three points in the relegation six pointer. The game itself was a fragmented one. Referee Felix Zwayer was forced to pause the game on two occasions due to fan trouble in the away end as pyrotechnics endangered the future of the game. After the game resumed, the tie was tight but Werder were able to snatch that all-important winner which means the Green-Whites spring over Mainz and Wolfsburg in the table into 14th spot with a total of 26 points, increasing the gap between Werder and HSV to nine points.

Line-up and formation: Werder’s captain, Zlatko Junuzovic, made a timely return from injury for the Nordderby. It meant there was a total of one change from last week’s team with Aron Jóhannson being benched in Zlatko’s place. Junuzovic joined Florian Kainz and Max Kruse. Bargfrede, Eggestein and Delaney made up the midfield in front of a backline of Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Moisander and Augustinsson. As ever, Jiri Pavlenka went in between the sticks.

Not pretty on or off the pitch

6th minute: Kainz tried his luck from distance but fires over. Referee Felix Zwayer is forced to briefly half the game due to HSV fans letting off fireworks.

16th minute: Delaney lays the ball back to Eggestein who shots but van Drongelen blocks for a corner which leads to nothing. At the other end, Jatta is denied by a mixture of Moisander and Pavlenka.

32nd minute: Moisander had the best chance of the game so far as Mathenia only partially clear a corner. He shoots past the visitors’ goalkeeper but the ball is blocked before the line.

44th minute: Kruse attempts to take a corner in front of the away fans but they continue to let off fireworks and Zwayer once again stops proceedings.

45th minute: Half-time at the Weser-Stadion. The teams head to the changing rooms with no goals to their name. A game of few chances so far with the match been frequently broken up due to fouls.

Fortune leads to the three points

46th minute: A promising start to the second half. Kruse causes problems for the Hamburg defence and Augustinsson has a chance but Douglas Santos intervenes to clear for a corner.

59th minute: The Green-Whites continue to impose themselves more and more on the game as Bargfrede’s volley is blocked.

72nd minute: Eggestein again! Suddenly, the Hamburg defence seems to open up and Eggestein opts to shoot rather than pass on the edge of the area but the 20-year-old’s strike goes narrowly wide of the post.

86th minute: GOOOOAL for Werder. 1-0! Rick van Drongelen own goal! Bargfrede wins the ball off Bobby Wood and plays through Jóhannsson. The substitute fires through the legs of Mathenia but the deflection on the way means it slows down as it heads over the line. Belfodil and van Drongelen fight to send the ball towards/away from goal respectively. Van Drongelen gets there first but Belfodil’s pressure means he fails to clear the ball and the ball hits the net!

90th minute: Final whistle. Werder win the Nordderby 1-0 over Hamburger SV!

Conclusion: Regardless of how it came about, Werder have won the 108th edition of the Nordderby! In the first half, the 42,100 inside the Weser-Stadion didn’t have much to cheer about as neither side were able to create goalscoring opportunities. After the break though, Werder grabbed the game and their pressure eventually resulted in a late winner.
