What a week! Five days after the home win against 1. FC Köln, Werder go away to Augsburg and will come home with the three points! 30,080 spectators were present in the WWK Arena to witness Werder’s 3-1 win over FCA. Ishak Belfodil fired Werder into the lead within five minutes and doubled it just before the end of the first half, making it his first ever brace in the Bundesliga. Augsburg’s Khedira got one back for the hosts just after the hour mark but Max Kruse secure the victory for the Green-Whites less than ten minutes before the end. With this victory, Werder continue their current run of form to four games unbeaten and record their 250th away win in the Bundesliga.

Line-up and formation: Sebastian Langkamp made his full Werder debut in Augsburg having made several substitute appearances previously, he was awarded his first start for the Green-Whites in Augsburg. He took up his place next to Niklas Moisander instead of the injured Milos Veljkovic- Theodore Gebre Selassie was on the right of the defence with Ludwig Augustinsson on the left. Philipp Bargfrede stood just in front of the defence with Max Eggestein and Thomas Delaney making up the midfield trio. Florian Kainz, Max Kruse and Ishak Belfodil all started up top in an offensive diamond.

Belfodil stumps Augsburg with his first Bundesliga brace

1st minute: Werder start brightly with Kruse having the first effort on goal within the opening minute. A moment later, Eggestein looks to get in on the action but Hitz is equal to both attempts.

5th minute: GOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL for Werder, 0-1, Ishak Belfodil! Kainz spreads the play with a beauty of a cross-field ball. Belfodil picks it up on the right-hand side with it all to do but he dances left then right and fires it into the far left-hand bottom corner. What skill! Werder fire themselves into the lead!

17th minute: Kruse is played in by Eggestein and has a chance for the second goal. Kruse’s effort however is too central and Hitz saves it comfortably.

27th minute: First chance for FCA. Michael Gregoritsch latches on to a misplaced Werder header but his effort sails just over the bar.

40th minute: GOOOOOAAAAALLL!! Number two for Belfodil! Werder 0-2! The Algerian records his first Bundesliga brace. He is through on goal, 1-on-1 with Hitz. His first effort is straight against the FCA keeper but he pokes the rebound home with his knee for a lucky, but thoroughly deserved second.

45th minute: Half-time in the WWK-Arena. Augsburg 0 - 2 Werder. Kohfeldt’s side is running rings around the side from Augsburg who never seem to have settled in the game. Belfodil has been immense but everyone backing him up has played their part from Kruse and Kainz to debutante Langkamp. An incredibly impressive first half performance from the Green-Whites:

Augsburg get one back but Kruse makes sure of the three points

53rd minute: Max Kruse gets Werder’s chances up and running in the second half with a beautiful cross into the middle. His corner finds Belfodil in the middle who heads it low but it is cleared of the line by one of the Augsburg defenders.

57th minute: A matter of inches. Eggestein takes the shot on from 20 minutes out. His shot is deflected and is sent spiralling into the air. When it comes down Hitz tips it onto the bar and prevents Werder’s third. So close!

63rd minute: Goal for Augsburg. 1-2, Rani Khedira. The ball in from Philipp Max finds Khedira who heads it back across the face of goal and it nestles into the Werder side netting.

66th minute: With Junuzovic on the pitch, Werder look dangerous again. He crosses in from the left to Gebre Selassie, who finds himself in plenty of space in the middle and should score but his header is too central and Hitz collects. An incredible tempo in the WWK Arena.

69th minute: What. A. Save. Augsburg have a freekick right on the edge of the box, Gregoritsch fires it low but Pavlenka somehow manages to get his fingertips on it to tip it onto the post and away from danger.

72nd minute: The guests are now under pressure but we can always rely on Pavlenka. Baier plays in Max who shoots well to Pavlenka’s left but the keeper does excellently to parry the ball out of danger-

82nd minute: GOOOAAAAALLLLL for Werder, 1-3, Max Kruse! That’s got to be it! Goal-scorer Ishak Belfodil turns assist provider. Belfodil plays it through Khedira’s legs to Kruse in the middle who finishes it well and high into the Augsburg net. Surely that’s the three points secured!

90th minute: All over in Augsburg! Werder beat FCA 1-3 and take the points back to the Weser!

Conclusion: Ten points from the last four games! The Green-Whites show how good they are in the first half with a splendid 45 and then battle well in the second to secure a cital three points. Werder will take huge momentum and confidence going into the internation break on their current run of form and will welcome the Bundesliga’s return with open arms. Regardless of Augsburg’s goal, the victory never really looked in doubt for Kohfeldt and his men and they had an impressive mix of solid defending and attacking flair. Belfodil’s goals at the start and finish of the first half took the wind out of the hosts and then Kruse’s sixth league goal of the season secure the points for the Green-Whites, as they overtake Hannover 96 in the league table.
