Werder Bremen ended the 2017/18 Bundesliga season with their 10th win this term. The Green-Whites won the away game at FSV Mainz 05 2-1 on Matchday 34. In front of 34,000 people at the sold-out OPEL Arena, Florian Kainz cancelled out Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s early Mainz opener (12’) after brilliant play from Maximilian Eggestein halfway through the first half (23’). Kainz then turned provider in the second 45, sending in an inch-perfect corner to the far post for Theodor Gebre Selassie to steer home with his head (79’). Werder end on 42 points in the table and rise above FC Augsburg into 11th position.

Starting line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt had to make changes to his defensive line compared to the four that started the home game against Leverkusen last week. Milos Veljkovic picked up a knock to his ankle during the week and didn’t travel to Mainz. Sebastian Langkamp moved across from left to right centre-back to cover for Veljkovic. Niklas Moisander was due to start at left centre-back but the Finn had to pull out after suffering a muscle problem in the warm-up. Marco Friedl came in in his place whilst Ludwig Augustinsson came back at left-back. Milot Rashica was also given a chance once more at right wing in Werder’s 4-3-3 formation. Zlatko Junuzovic dropped to the bench.

Eggestein sets Kainz up for the equaliser

The highlights:

12th minute: GOAL, 1-0 to Mainz 05, Jean-Philippe Gbamin. SVW are behind. Baku and Donati don’t get closed down on Werder’s left hand side which enables Baku to get in a low cross, which deflects unluckily off Friedl out to the edge of the area. Gbamin runs in and with the inside of his left foot, he drives it powerfully into the bottom corner. Pavlenka got a hand to it but he couldn’t keep it out.

23rd minute: GOAAAAAAAL, 1-1, Florian Kainz. Werder are back in it! Kruse holds onto the ball well in the Mainz half and plays in Eggestein on the run. His long ball into the box is just missed by Delaney but Kainz is running in behind the Dane and sticks his leg out to tap the ball into the net.

40th minute: Florian Kohfeldt is forced into an early change which means he must improvise with his defence once more. Langkamp has to come off with what looks like a hamstring injury. Jerome Gondorf comes on in his place. Gebre Selassie moves to right centre-back and Eggestein goes to right-back.

45th minute: A great Mainz chance just before the break. Brosinki’s long throw-in sets up Muto, who lets fire from a tight angle but the ball fizzes just over the bar.

45+2 minute: Half time in Mainz. It’s all still to play for after Kainz’s equaliser.

Gebre Selassie heads home the winner

47th minute: Almost the perfect start to the second half for the Green-Whites. Kainz’s tackle gives Kruse the ball on the left but his shot from distance misses the target by a whisker.

53rd minute: Werder almost take the lead! Kruse shoots directly from a free-kick from the right-hand side and Öztunali deflects the free-kick but the Mainz ‘keeper does brilliantly to stick out a leg and make the save.

55th minute: Werder now have their slice of luck at the other end. De Blasis dribbles past three men down the left-hand side and plays in Öztunali in the middle but his shot with his instep ricochets off the top of the bar.

69th minute: Friedl makes the most of space in the centre of the pitch to drive with the ball and shoots powerfully from 25 yards out but his shot is just off target.

79th minute: GOAAAAAAAAL, 2-1 to Werder, Theo Gebre Selassie. Werder get their reward for their high pressure. Kainz plays in a corner to the far post to where Gebre Selassie had stolen in unnoticed and the Czech defender heads home from close range.
90+1 minute: Sheesh, that was close, Muto almost gets a last-gasp equaliser but the shot from the Mainz striker only hits the post.

90+4 minute: All over in Mainz. Werder hold onto the win.

Summary: Mainz, who had sealed their Bundesliga survival last weekend with a win in Dortmund, wanted to build on their form from the previous weeks. Werder’s makeshift backline were busy in the opening stages as they sought to deal with the hosts fast-paced attacks. Kainz’s equaliser after Eggestein’s brilliant work beforehand was therefore even more crucial. Kohfeldt’s team began to control the game more and more in attack and defence but without creating any dangerous goalscoring chances. The forced changes to the defence before half time meant the team had to improvise even more at the back but that didn’t throw them off. Max Kruse came into the game more in the second half and worked well with Kainz to wreak havoc in the Mainz defence. Theodor Gebre Selassie then converted Kainz’s corner to seal the win for the Green-Whites in this lively and attacking encounter.
