In the final home game of the 2017/18 season, SV Werder fought to a point against Champions League aspirants Bayer Leverkusen. In Werder captain Zlatko Junuzovic’s final game in front of the Weserstadion faithful, it ended goalless. The visitors from the Rhineland were the more proactive side for the majority of the game but they came up against a steely Green-White defence and so failed to create many clear chances. There was a bit of controversy shortly before the full-time whistle, as referee Robert Hartmann blew up for a foul on ‘keeper Jiri Pavlenka. However, instead of giving the offender Kevin Volland a second yellow card, he instead booked Lucas Alario, who had not previously been cautioned, and so saved Leverkusen from playing out the final five minutes with 10 men. With their second draw in six days at the Weserstadion, Werder Bremen preserved their unbeaten Bundesliga home record under Kohfeldt in his first season as head coach. Now the Green-Whites travel to Mainz for the final game of the season.

Starting line-up and formation: In comparison to last week’s match against Borussia Dortmund, Florian Kohfeldt had to do without Ludwig Augustinsson – who had just come back from injury - once again, with the Swede suffering from the flu. Marco Friedl was therefore brought into the starting XI, with Langkamp, Veljkovic and Gebre Selassie making up the rest of the back four in front of Jiri Pavlenka. Philipp Bargfrede returned to the centre of midfield after serving a one-match suspension whilst Thomas Delaney and Zlatko Junuzovic started alongside him. Florian Kainz also came back into the starting line-up after suspension. He started on the left wing, with Max Kruse down the middle and Maximilian Eggestein operating down the right flank.

Chances few and far between in the first 45

5th minute: The first appeal in the Weserstadion. Kruse fights past Retsos and falls over inside the area but referee Hartmann waves play on despite protests from the Green-Whites.
15th minute: Friedl doesn’t get tight enough to Bailey, allowing the visitors to have their first chance. The Jamaican shoots with his left foot from the right-hand corner of the box aiming for the far corner but the shot goes just over the bar.

29th minute: After good build-up play from Delaney, the ball runs away from Kainz but he gets it back under control. Sprinting to the by-line, he leaves Retsos flailing but his cross lands on the roof of the net.

31st minute: Brandt goes for a bit of trickery and attempts a scorpion kick from Wendell’s cross. The German international connects with the ball but Pavlenka makes a simple save.

35th minute: Another good piece of play from Delaney, working his way past two Leverkusen players and then smashing a cross across the six-yard box towards Kruse. However, ‘keeper Leno dives at the feet of Werder’s number 10 and stops the chance.

45th minute: Half-time at the Weserstadion. 0-0 is a fair reflection of the game so far. Apart from Brandt’s overhead kick, there wasn’t a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes. Leverkusen moved the ball well but haven’t broken through against a well-organised Werder defence.

SVW hold firm – Hartmann books the wrong player

46th minute: Florian Kohfeldt makes a half-time change to give Werder more power going forward, with Jerome Gondorf on for Florian Kainz. He moves out to the right wing, with Maxi Eggestein moving into the centre of midfield and Zlatko Junuzovic going out to the left wing for his final 45 minutes in a Werder shirt at the Weserstadion.

50th minute: Bayer Leverkusen attack down the right and Retsos finds Volland with a driven ball into the middle. Pavlenka is there but he doesn’t hold onto the ball and it falls to Havertz. He was perhaps surprised at the chance, however, and so he blasts the ball over the top.

80th minute: After a cross from Junuzovic, Marco Friedl tries to finish from range but Jedvaj blocks the left-back’s shot.

85th minute: An awful decision from referee Robert Hartmann. Volland kicks Pavlenka in the thigh attempting to reach the ball and the referee blows up for a foul. However, Hartmann books the substitute Lucas Alario instead of giving the already-booked Volland a yellow card. Shortly after, he realises his mistake but he can no longer change his decision. Therefore Werder should’ve been playing the closing stages against 10 men!

90th minute: The whole of the Weserstadion rises to appload Zlatko Junuzovic as he leaves the Werder pitch for the final time. A real goosebumps moment in a game devoid of highlights.

90+3 minute: Full-time at the Weserstadion. Werder and Bayer Leverkusen play out a 0-0 draw.

Summary: The final home game of the season isn’t one that will live long in the memory. Over the 90 minutes, the goalscoring chances were rare, due to a combination of Werder’s solid defending and the Green-Whites not posing much of a threat going forward. Bernd Leno was rarely troubled in the second half, with attacks on the Leverkusen goal a rarity. The Green-Whites did much better in defence, with Veljkovic, Langkamp and co. holding firm and not letting anything through. This meant that a repeat of the heroics that Jiri Pavlenka showed to earn Werder a point last week against Dortmund was not necessary. All in all, a stress-free home game for the Green-Whites – and with 13 unbeaten home games in a row, it was a great send-off for captain Zlatko Junuzovic in his final game at the Weserstadion.
