Werder are still looking for their first victory of 2018. The game took place in front of 40,000 fans at the Weserstadion, but much to their frustration, the points were shared. Even though the home side created a lot of good chances, they were unable to convert their chances with the match finishing goalless. Jérôme Gondorf hit the post in the early stages and shortly afterwards Maximilian Eggestein’s goal was disallowed by VAR. There was also drama in the closing stages as Eggestein’s shot was blocked off the line by Jordan Torunarigha. Werder currently sit in 16th place; three points off safety.

Starting line-up and formation: Kohfeldt preferred Selassie over Bauer in contrast to last week when the German got the nod. Apart from this change, the same eleven as the previous week started the game in a formation that at times looked to be 4-1-4-1 and at others 4-3-3. The four at the back were therefore Gebre Selassie, Milos Veljkovic, Niklas Moisander and Ludwig Augustinsson. The midfield consisted of Philipp Bargfrede holding, with Thomas Delaney and Maximilian Eggestein in front. Then there was the familiar offensive trio of Zlatko Junuzovic, Jérôme Gondorf and Max Kruse. New signing Marco Friedl was also in the squad for the first time on the bench.

A frustrating night for Werder

Highlights:

1st minute: Post! Not even a minute has elapsed and the post of the Hertha goal has already shuddered. Kruse found Gebre Selassie in space with a wonderful ball over the top. Selassie put Gondorf through whose effort rattled against the post.

5th minute: Kalou manages to find space in the Werder box, taking the ball around Veljkovic and shot from 15 metres out but Pavlenka was equal to the effort.

10th minute: Eggestein scores but Werder don’t take the lead! Gebre Selassie takes the ball from the halfway line, passes to Gondorf who sets up Eggestein. He turns and buries the ball into the corner of the net. His celebrations, however, last less than a minute as referee Dankert checks with VAR and deems that Delaney had illegally raised an elbow in his aerial duel with Lustenberger.

23rd minute: With almost all of the Hertha players pinned back, Werder pass the ball around until Augustinsson takes the shot on with his weaker right foot. However, Thomas Kraft is equal to his effort.

33rd minute: Kruse seeks out Augustinsson with a wonderful pass, Eggestein’s effort was blocked but moments later the deflected effort from Hertha’s Ondrej Duda flies just over the crossbar.

44th minute: Another good Werder attack. Gondorf runs down the touchline, offloading to Kruse, whose shot it deflected by Niklas Stark and the ball hisses over the crossbar. So close.

45. + 2 minutes: Half-time at the Weserstadion. The clear chances have fallen to Werder but the game remains goalless.

Werder just can’t get the ball over the line

66th minute: The best Werder chance since the break – Gondorf set up Junuzovic from the right hand side but Junuzovic couldn’t time his shot right from 12 yards out.

67th minute: Werder got away with one there however as Hertha BSC almost take the lead out of nowhere. Lazaro beats Gebre Selassie at the byline and plays a ball into the six-yard box but the substitute Ibisevic smashes his volley from a brilliant position over the bar.

74th minute: So close AGAIN! Junuzovic finds Gebre Selassie in the middle but his header from six yards out is saved by Kraft and Gondorf’s shot on the follow-up hits the post and goes wide.

81st minute: Kruse is replaced by Ishak Belfodil who almost makes an instant impact but Kraft stops his shot well.

94th minute: Unbelievable! Eggestein volleys from four yards out but Torunarigha somehow stops it on the line and prevents a last-minute Werder victory. The referee blows his whistle seconds later.

Summary: From the start, the hosts showed almost limitless attacking intent. At the heart of this was Max Kruse and his movement as he gave players options, created space and distributed the ball. Hertha BSC sat deep and rarely went forward. Despite this, Werder continued to find gaps in the defence with great speed, Gondorf hit the post, Maximilian Eggestein found the net but it was disallowed and so it ended goalless. After Hertha coach Pal Dardai sent Kalou and Lazaro further forward to support Selke, it was harder for Werder to build from the back. The Green-Whites pulled themselves together after slipping a bit in the first twenty minutes of the second half and continued to pile on the pressure. But Gebre Selassie, Gondorf and Eggestein all missed chances to score potential winning goals.
