Finally! After weeks of waiting, SV Werder finally got their first win of the season on Matchday 12 and got a huge weight off their shoulders. In front of 41,500 spectators, the Green-Whites triumphed 4-0 over newly-promoted Hannover 96 to get their first Bundesliga win since April. Fin Bartels’ beautiful chip minutes before the break ensured Werder got the goal their first-half dominance deserved (39’). Then after Jiri Pavlenka’s brilliant save to deny Martin Harnik seconds into the second half, the hosts let loose. Max Kruse’s flawless hat-trick (55’, 59’, 78’) secured the victory.

Line-up and formation: Werder’s new head coach Florian Kohfeldt, on his home debut, put faith in the same eleven players in the same formation that he used in the Frankfurt game before the international break. Jiri Pavlenka started in goal with Theodor Gebre Selassie, Milos Veljkovic, Niklas Moisander and Ludwig Augustinsson starting in front of him. Philipp Bargfrede played in the central defensive midfield role with Thomas Delaney and Maximilian Eggestein given free roam to play in front of him. Zlatko Junuzovic, Fin Bartels and Max Kruse all played up front with the flexibility to be creative and make life as hard as possible for the away side’s defenders.

Ahead at the break: Kruse plays it through, Bartels with the delightful dink

The highlights:

20th minute: Big chance for Werder! A lovely one-two with Bartels sends Gebre Selassie on his way into the opposition penalty area and he forces Esser the 96 ‘keeper into a good save. Eggestein gets the rebound but his shot from 12 yards out is blocked.

23rd minute: Michael Esser is there again. Junuzovic sends a dangerous free-kick towards the far post but Esser is quick to react to pluck the ball out of the air.

30th minute: Wow that was close. Veljkovic is inches away from conceding an extremely unlucky own goal. He deflects Oliver Sorg’s driven cross and the majority of the 41,000 crowd breathe a sigh of relief as it trickles past the far post.

39th minute: GOAAALLLL, 1-0 to SVW, Fin Bartels. Finally, Werder go into the lead at home for the first time since the game against Schalke. Bartels beats Schwegler to the ball in midfield, plays it to Kruse who plays a beautifully-weighted ball through to his striking partner, who lifts it brilliantly over the sprawling Esser into the net.

45+1 minute: The Green-Whites go off to well-deserved applause. Werder go into the break ahead.

Kruse is the man – the striker bags a flawless hat-trick

46th minute: PAVLENKA! As he has many times already this season, the Czech stopper comes to his side’s rescue once again. The first lapse in concentration from the Bremen defence gives Martin Harnik a huge chance to equalise but Pavlenka makes himself big and prevents what would have been a wholly undeserved equaliser.

55th minute: GOAAAALLLL, 2-0 to SVW, Max Kruse. Werder clinically punish a catastrophic mistake from the visitors – Bargfrede presses Maier, wins the ball and has all the time in the world to play in Kruse who leaves Esser no chance.

59th minute: GOAAAALLLL, 3-0 to SVW, Max Kruse. It’s that man again. 96 fail to deal with a Werder counter once again, with Bartels turning provider to play in Kruse who turns to leave Sané trailing and fires past Esser.

78th minute: GOOAAALLLLLL, 4-0 to SVW, Max Kruse. It feels like the second half of last season again. Bartels is in space again and picks out Kruse who smashes past Esser for the third time to seal his hat-trick.

90+1 minute: Werder get their first win of the season!

Summary: The Green-Whites knew that they could build on the performance in the Frankfurt game by being courageous and positive from the get-go against the third-best defence in the Bundesliga. Junuzovic, Bartels and Eggestein all worked incredibly hard in attack, supported constantly by Gebre Selassie and Augustinsson on the wings. However, just as in the match two weeks ago, it looked like Werder would not be able to convert their numerous chances into goals before the break against the confident and intelligent visitors. However, the Green-Whites were rewarded for their patience in attack due to the brilliant interplay between Kruse and Bartels. After the break, it took Pavlenka’s save against Harnik to wake the home team up again and with two ice-cold counter attacks, Werder were able to put the game to bed. Hannover just could not deal with the hosts who played with a new-found freedom after the opening goal.
