47th minute: Nearly the perfect start for the Green-Whites in the second half. A free-kick is played long to Belfodil who directs it towards goal and then a good save and a clearance off the line are the only things that prevent Werder from doubling their lead.
53rd minute: Goal for Frankfurt. Luka Jovic equalises for SGE.
A wonder backheel from Boating lifted over the Werder defenders finds Jovic who slots home from close range. We knew it would take something special to get past Jiri.
56th minute: Veljkovic allows Jovic to run free and from there he is one on one with Pavlenka. In true Pavlenka style however he stops the effort of the Frankfurt forward with and outstretched leg. Nicely done, Jiri.
75th minute: Kohfeldt makes his second change bringing on Aron Johannsson for Ishak Belfodil.
79th minute: GOOOOAAALLL for SVW!! David Abraham puts it in his own net.
Against the run of play Werder again fire themselves into the lead, with a fair amount of luck but who cares, it’s in! Junuzovic carries the ball on the left hand-side and plays the ball into the mixer. It comes off of Abraham’s head and loops high into the air heading goalward. From there, Hradecky makes a mess of it, jumping to claim but letting it slip through his hands as it ends up in the back of the net.
89th minute: Kohfeldt makes his third and final change as captain Junuzovic walks off to a stand ovation after a true captains performance. In his place comes Langkamp as Florian looks to sure up the three points.
90+4 minutes: That’s it! Werder pick up three points in a game that was far from the prettiest but an important three points nonetheless.
Conclusion: Both teams cancelled each other out reasonably well with Werder getting the better of the luck and with it the three points. Good play down the left from Friedl, Kruse and Delaney leads the ball eventually to Junuzovic who slots it home for the first goal. Junuzovic really made the difference today and his goal was fully deserved. Werder controlled most of the first half and were unfortunate not to go two in front early on in the second half but then Frankfurt got the all-important equaliser, which gave Niko Kovac’s side confidence. This confidence showed as they had a succession of chances as Werder relied on Jiri Pavlenka to keep them in the game. The mistakes from David Abraham and Lukas Hradecky meant however that it was Werder that got the third goal, which proved to be decisive. On the whole, the game was fairly even but ended with Werder continuing their unbeaten run under Kohfeldt in the Weserstadion and an important step at such a late stage in the Bundesliga.
