Werder remain unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga under Kohfeldt but have to be thankful for the luck they received. The Green-Whites beat sixth in the table Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 (1-0) in front of 42,100 fans in a sold-out Weserstadion. Captain Junuzovic fired Werder into the lead (30’) after an assist from Delaney and the boys went in at the break with the lead. In the second half, the guests came out fighting and got their reward early on as Jovic scored the equaliser (53’). It was Junuzovic again however that forced the second goal (79’) as his cross deflected off of Frankfurt’s captain Abraham and dropped into the net after being fumbled by SGE keeper Lukas Hradecky.

Line-up and formation: Two changes were made by Kohfeldt to the side that started in the away win over Augsburg. Zlatko Junuzovic came back into the side and took up the armband. He was accompanied up top by Max Kruse and Ishak Belfodil. Florian Kainz therefore sat on the bench in place of Junuzovic even after the Austrian had a successful international break. Milos Veljkovic also came back in after missing the Augsburg game through injury. The centre-back played for Serbia on Tuesday and was back fighting fit to start against Frankfurt. Therefore in front of Jiri Pavlenka stood the usual pairing of Niklas Moisander and Milos Veljkovic with Ludwig Augustinsson on the left and Theodor Gebre Selassie on the right. Sebastian Langkamp was the other player to drop to the bench after filling in for Milos against Augsburg. In midfield stood Philipp Bargfrede in his usual defensive role with Thomas Delaney and Maximilian Eggestein supporting further forward.

Delaney tees it up, Junuzovic knocks it home

Match highlights:

17th minute: Best bit of Werder action so far. Delaney receives a long diagonal ball from Veljkovic and sticks it  up to the back post where Belfodil is waiting.  Ishak heads it downwards but can’t get the power he wants behind his header and Hradecky tips it behind for a corner.

22nd minute: What an interception from Gebre Selassie! Boateng sends Wolf down the right-hand side and from there he carries forward and crosses low to the back post where Rebic awaits but Theo comes just in time to save the day and prevent a tap in.

28th minute: GOOOOOAAALLLLL for Werder! Zlatko with the opener!
Kruse plays it forward down the left flank to Delaney who charges down the wing, gets his head up and spots the armband in the middle. Zlatko receives the ball and only needs one touch to direct it past Hradecky and fire Werder into the lead. His finish takes a slight touch off of a Frankfurt play on the way through.

37th minute: PAVLENKA! An incredible double save from Jiri, first from Boateng’s effort which he parries and then comes Wolf who fires his effort towards the Werder goal but our number one is equal to the effort.

45+2 minutes: Half time in the Weserstadion. Werder had to adjust early having lost Augustinsson to injury but then deserved their lead in a hard-fought first half.

Jovic equalises only for Abraham to head in at the wrong end

47th minute: Nearly the perfect start for the Green-Whites in the second half. A free-kick is played long to Belfodil who directs it towards goal and then a good save and a clearance off the line are the only things that prevent Werder from doubling their lead.

53rd minute: Goal for Frankfurt. Luka Jovic equalises for SGE.
A wonder backheel from Boating lifted over the Werder defenders finds Jovic who slots home from close range. We knew it would take something special to get past Jiri.

56th minute: Veljkovic allows Jovic to run free and from there he is one on one with Pavlenka. In true Pavlenka style however he stops the effort of the Frankfurt forward with and outstretched leg. Nicely done, Jiri.

75th minute: Kohfeldt makes his second change bringing on Aron Johannsson for Ishak Belfodil.

79th minute: GOOOOAAALLL for SVW!! David Abraham puts it in his own net.
Against the run of play Werder again fire themselves into the lead, with a fair amount of luck but who cares, it’s in! Junuzovic carries the ball on the left hand-side and plays the ball into the mixer. It comes off of Abraham’s head and loops high into the air heading goalward. From there, Hradecky makes a mess of it, jumping to claim but letting it slip through his hands as it ends up in the back of the net.

89th minute: Kohfeldt makes his third and final change as captain Junuzovic walks off to a stand ovation after a true captains performance. In his place comes Langkamp as Florian looks to sure up the three points.

90+4 minutes: That’s it! Werder pick up three points in a game that was far from the prettiest but an important three points nonetheless.

Conclusion: Both teams cancelled each other out reasonably well with Werder getting the better of the luck and with it the three points. Good play down the left from Friedl, Kruse and Delaney leads the ball eventually to Junuzovic who slots it home for the first goal. Junuzovic really made the difference today and his goal was fully deserved. Werder controlled most of the first half and were unfortunate not to go two in front early on in the second half but then Frankfurt got the all-important equaliser, which gave Niko Kovac’s side confidence. This confidence showed as they had a succession of chances as Werder relied on Jiri Pavlenka to keep them in the game. The mistakes from David Abraham and Lukas Hradecky meant however that it was Werder that got the third goal, which proved to be decisive. On the whole, the game was fairly even but ended with Werder continuing their unbeaten run under Kohfeldt in the Weserstadion and an important step at such a late stage in the Bundesliga.
