Finally! After ten years without an away win against Borussia Dortmund, SV Werder Bremen ended their wait on matchday 15. Maximilian Eggestein’s beautiful strike (26’) sent the almost 9,000 Werder fans out of the 81,160 spectators at the Signal Iduna Park into frenzy. Whoever thought that Werder would crumble after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s equaliser early into the second half (57’) were proved completely wrong. Theodor Gebre Selassie’s downward header from Max Kruse’s corner (65’) set Werder back on the road to victory and the Green-Whites held on to confirm a phenomenal away victory.

Starting line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt went with the same starting XI in Dortmund as he did for last week’s home win against Stuttgart. The head coach set his team up in a more defensive fashion however in order to soak up the pressure of BVB’s dangerous front three. This meant that Philipp Bargfrede often dropped into the centre of defence alongside Milos Veljkovic and Niklas Moisander, to strengthen the core of the defence.

Werder’s performance tarnished only by Bartels’ injury

The highlights:

9th minute: Three Werder players put Aubameyang under pressure in the Dortmund half and Bartels wins the ball before squaring it to Junuzovic. The captain makes space to shoot and his strike from 20 yards out sails just over the crossbar.

22nd minute: Junuzovic goes close again. Subotic’s header after Moisander’s long ball lands at the captain’s feet and he drives just over from range.

26th minute: GOAAAAAAALLLLL, 1-0 to SVW, Maximilian Eggestein. BVB can only watch as the Green-Whites take a deserved lead. Kruse’s lofted cross-field ball finds Eggestein at the right-hand corner of the BVB box and with time to pick his spot, Eggestein drills it into the far corner.

33rd minute: Florian Kainz is brought on earlier than expected with Fin Bartels forced off with an injury. He seemed to have picked up a knock on his left Achilles after a battle with Sokratis.

46th minute: Half time in Dortmund. The whistles from the home fans at the break are a clear sign of how the Green-Whites have dominated the hosts.

Gebre Selassie scores after Aubameyang’s equaliser

47th minute: Shinji Kagawa benefits from a Veljkovic mistake and he forces Jiri Pavlenka into a smart save from the edge of the area. That is BVB’s first goalscoring chance all afternoon.

49th minute: Eek, that was close. Pavlenka fumbles the ball from a Schürrle cross but the Green-Whites work together to clear their lines.

57th minute: GOAL, 1-1, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. BVB equalise. Gebre Selassie’s header only goes as far as Schmelzer, whose diagonal ball finds Kagawa at the far post inside the six-yard box. He heads it across to Aubameyang, who scraps against Bargfrede and Pavlenka to scramble the ball in.

64th minute: Werder have two huge chances to score! Gondorf misses a one-on-one chance after being set up by Kainz before Bürki does brilliantly to parry Kruse’s shot behind for a corner.

65th minute: GOAAAAAALLLLL, 2-1 to Werder, Theodor Gebre Selassie. From the resulting corner, SVW regain the lead! Kruse’s corner is met by Gebre Selassie running in and he heads it down past Bürki into the net!

72nd minute: A huge slice of luck for the Green-Whites. Kagawa shoots from five yards out but the ball hits the back of Aubameyang, who is lying on the floor, and flies over the crossbar.

94th minute: It’s OVER in Dortmund! Werder take all the three points back to Bremen despite a much-improved BVB performance in the second half.

Summary: The strengthening of the core of defence with Philipp Bargfrede sitting deeper as well as the clever movement and delivery in important areas paid dividends. The hosts had chances in the final third with their pacey wingers but the Green-Whites were strong in defence and picked off the attacks. The courageous and tactically clever performance from SVW meant BVB rarely dominated the game in front of their fans. Kohfeldt’s men constantly forced the hosts into making mistakes and surrendering the ball which created numerous counterattacking and goalscoring opportunities. Eggestein’s wonderful shot put the icing on the cake of a brilliant performance from the visitors. The black and yellows were courageous and improved after the break and had chances to make up for their poor first half showing. But Werder showed impressive character after injuries to Bartels and Junuzovic and the equaliser from Aubameyang to not give in. The goal to regain the lead allowed the Green-Whites to run down the clock and they ran out victors after a wonderful team performance.
