SV Werder Bremen will be praised for this performance but they unfortunately come away with nothing from the Allianz Arena. With Werder’s 4-2 loss to record champions FC Bayern München, they remain 16th in the Bundesliga. Werder started positively and deservedly took the lead through Jerome Gondorf (25’) but were pegged back just before the break as Thomas Müller equalised for the hosts (41’). Robert Lewandowski (63’, 77’) and Müller again netted for the hosts after the break. Niklas Süle’s own goal (74’) gave Werder hope of taking a point back to Bremen but Bayern ruthlessly put the game to bed shortly after.

Starting line-up and formation: As expected, Florian Kohfeldt set his team out more defensively against the record champions than in last week’s fixture against Hoffenheim. Five defenders played in front of Pavlenka with Veljkovic, Moisander and Bargfrede in the middle whilst Augustinsson and Bauer played as wing-backs. The midfield aimed to be compact with Thomas Delaney back from injury, alongside Gondorf, Eggestein and Junuzovic. Kruse was on his own up top.

Positive start rewarded – Müller ice-cool

7th minute: Werder have begun really positively, pushing forward a lot early on and they almost get a goal to boot. Augustinsson crosses the ball in beautifully to Kruse who has space to head it down but it hits the outside of the post and goes for a goal-kick.

25th minute: GOAAAAAAL for Werder. 0-1, Jerome Gondorf! SVW take the lead and it’s fully deserved! Kruse plays a brilliant ball which splits the defence and Gondorf just has Ulreicht to beat. He converts by poking home through the goalkeeper’s legs. An unbelievable start!

33rd minute: Three Bayern players take shots from inside the Werder area but a Green-White is there to block it each time. At the end of the scramble, the ball goes wide and Pavlenka has it for a goal-kick.

41st minute: Goal for Bayern, 1-1, Thomas Müller. Boateng plays a diagonal ball into the Werder area. Veljkovic hesitates and doesn't attack the cross. Müller gets to the ball first and volleys home, leaving Pavlenka no chance from six yards out.

45th minute: Time for a breather in Munich. It is great to see how courageous Werder have performed so far. After 25 minutes, Kohfeldt’s side got their reward for their efforts and went in front through Gondorf. But Werder didn’t let off and continued to press forward when given the opportunity. The equaliser just before the break was a warning of how quickly you can be punished for a lapse in concentration in Munich.

Heading king Lewandowski kills the game off

56th minute: Kruse heads the ball down to Gondorf, who has plenty of space. He looks up and notices that Ulreich is slightly off of his line. The scorer of the first attempts a chip to the far corner but Süle clears it away. That was a big chance for Werder and Ulreich and his side got lucky with that one.

63rd minute: Goal for Bayern, 2-1, Robert Lewandowski. The hosts go into the lead as Lewandowski rises higher than Delaney to nod home a James corner.

65th minute: Straight afterwards, Kruse and Gebre Selassie have good chances to get an equaliser. Kruse’s chip is denied by Ulreich and Gebre Selassie’s header goes just over the bar.

69th minute: Pavlenka and Moisander deny Ribery and Lewandowski. The effort that Werder have put in is slowly starting to show.

74th minute: GOAAAAAAAAL for Werder, 2-2, Niklas Süle own goal! Kruse crosses the ball into the area from a corner. Delaney jumps but misses the ball and it bounces off Niklas Süle and past Ulreich into the net.

76th minute: Goal for Bayern, 3-2, Robert Lewandowski. Just two minutes after Werder’s equaliser, Bayern take the lead again. The goal again comes from a high ball which is crossed in by Müller and converted by Lewandowski.

84th minute: Goal for Bayern, 4-2, Thomas Müller. And that is probably that. The record champions show their quality. James chips the ball over the Werder defence and Müller latches on to it and fires home.

90th minute: Full-time in Munich. Werder lose 4-2 to FC Bayern.

Summary: Despite the loss, SV Werder’s performance earned the plaudits deservedly today. Florian Kohfeldt’s side took the game to the favourites in the first half. After Gondorf’s goal to give Werder the lead, they did not sit back. FC Bayern could not get through on the floor so instead resorted to a lofted ball for the equaliser. Werder continued to play well in the second half and showed character to come back after Lewandowski scored to make it 2-1. Towards the end, Werder seemed to tire but they didn’t give up. FC Bayern’s class showed but Werder can take lots of positives from the performance into next weekend.
