Werder Bremen missed the chance to end their wait for a Bundesliga win this season on matchday 10. In front of 41,000 spectators at the Weserstadion, the Green-Whites lost 3-0 to FC Augsburg, making it five losses in the league in this campaign. A double-whammy from the visitors shortly before the break through Michael Gregoritsch’s header (40’) and Alfred Finnbogason’s penalty (45+2’) meant Werder went into the second half with a mountain to climb. Then Gregoritsch’s goal, converting a swift counter-attacking move (61’), meant the hosts’ attempts to get back into the game at the start of the second period were all for nothing.

Starting line-up and formation: Head coach Alexander Nouri made three changes to his starting XI four days after beating Hoffenheim in the DFB-Pokal. The Green-Whites switched back to a system with three at the back. Lamine Sané played in the central centre-back position after being rested in midweek. Robert Bauer and Niklas Moisander played alongside him. Milos Veljkovic and Ulisses Garcia were benched along with Philipp Bargfrede. Maximilian Eggestein returned to the centre of defensive midfield in Bargfrede’s place. Theodor Gebre Selassie and Ludwig Augustinsson played as wing-backs whilst Thomas Delaney and captain Zlatko Junuzovic played in more attacking roles in front of Eggestein. After two short appearances from the bench, Nouri gave Max Kruse a full return in the starting line-up alongside Ishak Belfodil to put pressure on FCA from the front.

Late first-half double-whammy shocks SVW

27th minute: The Green-White move breaks down at the edge of the penalty area, but Belfodil does well to keep the ball and plays it back to Eggestein, who forces the FCA ‘keeper Hitz into a save from 20 yards.

36th minute: Two good chances for SVW. First Kruse forces Hitz into a diving save from range before Augustinsson’s shot is blocked by an Augsburg defender.

38th minute: A big let off! FCA have not had a chance for a while but after Philipp Max’s free kick is not cleared away properly, Daniel Baier connects sweetly with the ball but it cannons off the crossbar.

40th minute: Goal, 1-0 to FCA, Michael Gregoritsch. Bauer plays in Max who crosses from the left and Gregoritsch beats Delaney in the air to head home.

45+2 minute: Goal, 2-0 to FCA, Alfred Finnbogason (pen). The Icelandic man sends Pavlenka the wrong way from the penalty spot after being brought down by Moisander.

45+3 minute: Half-time in the Weserstadion. It’ll be hard for SVW to come back from this one.

Gregoritsch gets his second to end Werder’s comeback hopes

46th minute: With two attacking changes (Kainz and Hajrovic for Bauer and Eggestein), Nouri has sent his team back out in a 4-4-2 system.

56th minute: Werder have started well after the break. They are trying everything to get back into the game and Hajrovic’s volley from Kainz’s cross is blocked.

57th minute: Belfodil’s cross from the right falls to Sané in the six-yard box but Hitz is there again.

61st minute: Goal, 3-0 for FCA, Michael Gregoritsch. Frustrating! Werder are outnumbered at the back from a counter after Khedira wins the ball off Kainz. Caiuby plays Gregoritsch through and he leaves Pavlenka no chance once again.

71st minute: Werder are wobbling. Max crosses once again and Finnbogason is unmarked six yards out but he heads over. Pavlenka saves moments later from Khedira before Heller fires over from a narrow angle.

90+1 minute: Full-time at the Weserstadion. Werder fall to their fifth defeat of the season.

Summary: The intentions of both teams were clear from the start, with Werder wanting to push forward and Augsburg wanting to snuff out their attacks and hit the Green-Whites on the counter. Werder were putting on more and more pressure until 10 minutes before the break when FCA captain raised a warning sign with a shot which hit the bar before the double-whammy from Manuel Baum’s side. Werder came out strongly after the restart in a 4-4-2 formation but after the third goal, the Green-Whites’ heads went down and could not get back into the game.
