Maximilian Eggestein made it clear what matters now. “We need to get points on the board,” the 20-year-old said after the 2-1 loss against Schalke 04. There is no time to lament about the unlucky manner in which the game played out, the frustrating own goal the team conceded or the three points that Werder still haven’t won this season. “It is good that we have another chance to get three points on Tuesday. Now we have to analyse where we went wrong against Schalke and put it right,” Florian Kainz said.

WERDER.DE summarised the reaction of the the most important topics from the afternoon.

On the way the game played out:

Alexander Nouri: “We shouldn’t have lost the game. For me, we were really really unlucky today. After we went ahead, we conceded the equaliser too quickly and we had to adapt quickly after Max went off. I was happy with the way we played today though.”

Frank Baumann: “We were good defensively and deserved to go into the lead. But we came off the pitch empty-handed. If the team play together like they did today, we will get points against Wolfsburg and Freiburg.”

Lamine Sané: “We work hard in training, we played well and created chances. We just can’t finish. We were on top but we just didn’t get a reward at the end.”

Thomas Delaney: “We are making mistakes at the moment that we shouldn’t be making. And we aren’t making the most of the chances that we are creating. It feels really bitter to lose today.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We should’ve got something more from the game. We punished ourselves, the two goals we conceded were silly. It’s really bitter and hard to put into words. We were much better in the first half and should’ve extended our lead further but we conceded the equaliser straight away. Even though Schalke got into the game more in the second half, we had more chances to score and created good opportunities.”

Florian Kainz: “I think we played quite well. We were up for it, we wanted to win at whatever cost and we created some good chances. But then we made life very hard for ourselves with two mistakes.”

On the unlucky equaliser:

Milos Veljkovic: “The own goal was just unlucky. I should’ve done better even though Lamine got in my way. We should’ve communicated better. Of course we were annoyed that we conceded so soon after going in front – and then obviously we were annoyed to concede again.”

Lamine Sané: “Milos and I both reacted instinctively in that situation as defenders do. It was pure reflexes. We both wanted to clear the ball. And the way it turned out was unlucky.”

Frank Baumann: “In terms of the goal we conceded, we did Schalke’s work for them. It was unlucky and it was worse that it was straight after going into the lead. We needed to communicate better."

On Max Kruse's injury:

Alexander Nouri: “The injury made the afternoon even worse for us. It’s obviously a big loss for us. Everyone knows Max’s value to the team. We hope that he’ll be fit again soon. We will compensate for his loss together as a squad.”

Frank Baumann: “First I’d like to wish Max a good recovery. We will miss him. It is for exactly this reason that we signed Ishak Belfodil.”

Lamine Sané: “The loss of Max will definitely be harder to come back from than the loss of the three points today. He’s a really important player for us. Nonetheless it is really important that we remain upbeat. We have players in the squad who can fill the gap that Max leaves in the team.”

On the current table:

Maximilian Eggestein: “We have to begin to pick up points and we need to get the feeling of winning back in the squad again.”

Alexander Nouri: “We believe in the way we play and can’t let ourselves be swayed by recent results.”

Milos Veljkovic: “We have to carry on into the next few games with self-confidence. We have to concentrate more in the final stages. Then we can get a reward for our work and win the points we need.”

Florian Kainz: “We know the situation we’re in. We have to work hard and begin to get points on the board.”
