He has taken his first steps back to fitness. Niklas Moisander trained for the first time, individually, on Monday afternoon since he suffered a muscle strain in pre-season. The Finnish international completed his first training session along with rehabilitation coach Jens Beulke. “I am happy to finally be back on the pitch,” Moisander said to Werder.de at the end of his session.

Despite his joy at his progress, the Finn knows that he still has lots of work to do before his return: “Today was only training on my coordination and running. In the next few weeks I will step up my training bit by bit. Then I’ll see when I am back to full fitness.”

Moisander won’t be back in time for the game against FC Bayern on Saturday. The vice-captain will be supporting his teammates inside the Weserstadion though: “I will obviously cross my fingers for the boys against Bayern this weekend.”
