The centre-back came through all of the Finland youth teams, before celebrating his debut in the first team on 29th May 2008 as a 22-year-old in a friendly against Turkey (0-2). He made 59 further caps including 2 goals. “I have many fond memories from the last nine years and there are many games which I will never forget. But most of all I have enjoyed joining up with the national team and the daily routine with the side. It was always an honour and it was a lot of fun. It is a disappointment that we didn’t manage to reach a major tournament. That was always my dream.”
The decision wasn’t an easy one for the centre-back to make but the moment is right for him to retire. “I have had a few injuries in recent years and I have noticed that it has been tough for my body to make the trips with the team and play two games in a short space of time. I want to now concentrate on my club football and Werder and I want to be able to give 100% for the club and this decision helps me to stay fit and help the team in the best way possible. Another reason is my family. My girlfriend has been a constant by my side in the last few years and she has experienced all the highs and lows with me. I want to spend more time with her and my daughter.”
