Following in the footsteps of his teammate Josh Sargent, who signed his professional contract on his eighteenth birthday last week, Jean-Manuel Mbom also signed his first professional contract with Werder Bremen, which will come into force on 1st July 2018. The announcement was made by Frank Baumann, Werder Bremen managing director, on Monday afternoon.

“We expect Manuel to become an integral part of our squad. After a long time out injured, he has come back better than ever. In the next few months we will start to seamlessly integrate him into the first team squad from the u19s,” said Frank Baumann.

Björn Schierenbeck, training centre director, is fully convinced of the 18-year-old’s potential, “Manuel signing his contract shows the faith we place in our young talents. Since he has been with us, he has come on massively as a player and demonstrated an exemplary attitude. We should be very proud that he has chosen to stay with Werder for the next step in his career.”

For Jean-Manuel Mbom himself, this contract marks a huge step towards realising his dream, “Since I joined the academy it has been my dream to play in the Weserstadion. With this contract I am one step closer. I am so happy that Werder have put their trust in me,” said the 18-year-old.

Jean-Manuel Mbom joined Werder in 2013 from JFV Göttingen. Since then he has played 52 times for the u17s, scoring 22 times. In the current season, he has been captain of Werder u19s, making six appearances and scoring once.
