Maximilian Eggestein has extended his contract at SV Werder Bremen ahead of schedule. The 20-year-old signed his new deal on Tuesday afternoon and the news was announced by Werder's sporting director, Frank Baumann.

"Maxi contributed to our superb run in the second half of the season with his strong performances and he took on an important role in the side. We're pleased that he will continue to work for us into the future," said Frank Baumann.

Head coach Alexander Nouri praised the performances of the 20-year-old, who helped Werder out of a sticky mid-season situation by putting in some solid performances in the centre of midfield. "Maxi took the responsibility and performed impressively. He has immense quality, despite his young age and identifies 100% with the team, the club and what we're trying to do. I'm pleased that we can continue to work together," said Nouri.

A contract extension was the next logical step for the Hannover born man who joined Werder in 2011. "The club gave me the opportunity to steadily improve myself and to achieve my dream of playing in the Bundesliga. Now I want to represent this club for a long time in the Bundesliga. I think we finished last season in a positive way and I us to continue on this road," said Eggestein.

Maximilian Eggestein has been at Werder for six years. From 2011 to 2014, the midfielder lived at the Werder boarding school at the Weser-Stadion. In November 2014, he became the second youngest player ever to play for Werder in the Bundesliga, aged just 17. In total he has played 25 Bundesliga games for Werder, 15 of those came in the second half of last season. He's scored one goal for the Green-Whites.  He's also played 56 times for the Werder U23s.
