It ended as it began – with a goal. After a blistering start and Philipp Bargfrede’s goal, a third home win in a row was there for the taking but Werder could not get the job done in the end. Mainz scored the equaliser with practically the last kick of the game to make it 2-2. Mixed in with the frustration about conceding the late equaliser, however, was also the pure determination to come back in the second half of the season and pick up more points and also to say goodbye to 2017 with a win in the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday and go into the winter break on a high.

WERDER.DE summarised the post-match reaction from the Green-Whites.

On the way the game played out:

Ishak Belfodil: “The early goal helped us to get into our groove. We put it all in from the start and fought for 90 minutes as a team. It was a great feeling to score and a big relief for me personally- At half-time the boss told us to keep on going to kill off the game and we tried to do that. We had a lot of chances to score the third goal. But us not doing that gave the opponent more hope. The finish is just so frustrating. We will learn from this though, I’m sure.”

Niklas Moisander: “We had a really good first half and we knew that Mainz would throw everything at us in the second half. We just couldn’t get that third goal. Mainz put pressure on us after their first goal but we shouldn’t have let that happen.“

Maximilian Eggestein: “We were too complacent and we invited pressure by just trying to hold onto the lead. We were the masters of our own downfall today.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “We didn’t put enough pressure on them in the second half, we didn’t defend high enough and we allowed them to have too much possession. Even though you could say we were much better in the first half, I thought that we were in control for the majority of the game. We let Mainz have too many chances in the first half. Despite that, the boys gave it their all and it was a strong performance.”

Frank Baumann: “We played well in the first half, defended cirageously and created lots of chances. But we let them have too many opportunities too, which we were lucky not to concede. It was a tidy performance for most of the second half too but we didn’t clear the danger in some situations. And we sat back too much which invited the pressure.”

On the gutting equaliser:

Ishak Belfodil: “It is a proper kick in the teeth for the team. It wasn’t just a last-minute goal but it was in the last second. It proved that in the Bundesliga, you can never switch off thinking you have won for even a second. They are a top-quality team.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We are just so disappointed, it’s so frustrating. It means our brilliant first half was all for nothing. We can’t let something like that happen.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was so against the run of play. We controlled the game. Both of their goals came from practically nothing. It is lucky but that’s football.”

Frank Baumann: “If you let a 2-0 lead slip at home it is really disappointing, especially when the equaliser comes so late on. Maybe we were too nervous about conceding at the end.”

On the current table:

Niklas Moisander: “I have big hopes for us. We have put in good performances recently and we know that we have quality in our team and we will pick up more points in the second half of the season.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We might have wished for the position we’re in now six weeks ago but it is hard to focus on the positives after the way that game ended. It would definitely better for our mental state if we were out of the relegation places. We need to prove in the second half of the season that that’s not where we belong.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “We are looking forward. We aren’t in the automatic relegation places anymore but it’s still dangerous where we are. We can’t forget that we have picked up a few points in the last few weeks and we didn’t lose today. It is a partial victory and we can build on where we are in the second half of the season.”

Frank Baumann: “Even if we had won today, we wouldn’t have been safe. The table situation isn’t that decisive, it is more annoying that we lost the two points today. Our senses will be sharpened by the fact we’re in the relegation places. We are in as tough a situation now as we were before and we will focus on preparing for the second half of the season now. It is too early to summarise the first half of the season because we’ve still got an important DFB-Pokal tie to contest.”

On the upcoming DFB-Pokal tie against Freiburg:

Ishak Belfodil: “We won’t let the result today get us down. We want to channel the anger we have from the game today into positive energy for Freiburg. It will be rimportant that we fight as hard as we did today and with our fans behind us, get into the quarters.”

Niklas Moisander: “It’s good that the next game is so soon. We want to go into the winter break on a high.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It’s good we have that game because it means we don’t go into the winter break with this game fresh in our minds. We need to show against Freiburg that we are better than today’s result.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Today’s result hurts but when we wake up tomorrow, it’s just three days until the cup game against Freiburg. Today we are going to go over this game and analyse it and tomorrow we will focus on the DFB-Pokal.”
