++ Tight at the back: “The reward for what we showed was much too small,” head coach Florian Kohfeldt said after the 0-0 draw against Hertha BSC. Every Werder fan would agree with Kohfeldt’s summary which was spoken from the heart. Despite the frustrating point, two days later, one can say that it was a really good performance from the Green-Whites and one that surely will be finally crowned with goals in coming games. Even just the one goal would be enough against Schalke if they defend like they did against Hertha. SVW kept their sixth clean sheet of the season on Saturday which put Jiri Pavlenka up to second in the clean sheets table. Niklas Moisander impressed once again with a strong performance. The Finn won 78% of his tackles and had 91 touches, the most out of any of the players on the pitch. Werder’s defence only allowed two shots on target all game. SVW don’t have any problems in defence. But up top that is the tenth time that Werder have not scored in a game this season. +++

++ Unbeaten at home: That record remained intact this weekend – SV Werder are still unbeaten under Florian Kohfeldt at home. In the six games that Kohfeldt has overseen at the Weserstadion as head coach, Max Kruse, Moisander and co. have picked up three wins and three draws (12 points). +++

++ Double stroke of bad luck: Werder’s number eight Jerome Gondorf was twice denied by the woodwork with the keeper all at sea on Saturday. After 60 seconds, Gondorf smashed the ball against the far post and then shortly before the end of the match, his shot grazed the post and went wide. A curious stat: In his previous 72 Bundelsiga matches, Gondorf had only hit the woodwork once. +++

++ Happy birthday, legend: Everyone at Werder is wishing our former striker Ivan Klasnic all the best for his birthday and above all good health. The Croatian, who scored 77 goals in 205 games for the Green-Whites between 2001 and 2008, turns 38 on Monday. After a third kidney transplant at the end of 2017, the “Killer” is on the road to recovery. The Golden Boot winner in 2004 won the double with the Green-Whites and also finished in second place twice with Werder. +++

++ Never again! Before the Bundesliga home game against Hertha on Saturday, the fans at the ground remembered Leo Weinstein and Dr. Hermann Horwitz. Both were Jewish Germans who were victims of Nazism. Weinstein played in the youth academy at SV Werder. His coach told him that because he was Jewish, he wouldn’t be able to play for the club any more. Dr. Horwitz – who was the team doctor at Hertha BSC in the 1920s – was told that he could not practice medicine anymore and he was banned from the club. These are just two of countless examples. With the campaign “Never Again!” the whole of German football is setting into motion the campaign to never forget these examples and to promote a tolerant society where no one would be persecuted or discriminated against because of their faith, background or sexual orientation. +++
