Adapt and overcome: Niklas Moisander will not be in the starting XI to face Hannover on Friday for the first time in six matchdays. The Finn has been a staple in the Werder defence since recovering from his muscle strain in September, but will not be able to play against Hannover due to a yellow-card suspension. “We can deal with his absence as we have a strong defence, but we can’t replace his build-up play and leadership qualities,” explains Florian Kohfeldt. Who exactly will be called up to stand in for Moisander in the HDI-Arena is unknown according to the head coach. Marco Friedl, Sebastian Langkamp and Luca Caldirola are candidates for the task. Kohfeldt did not rule out a change in formation. “We don’t want to reveal too much,” grins the head coach.

Augustinsson injured: Luck was not on Ludwig Augustinsson’s side last week. The Sweden international was forced to miss his country’s games due to muscular problems in his thigh. However, he was back in the starting XI for the game against Eintracht Frankfurt, but had to come off after just 25 minutes due to injury. “It’s not the same injury which stopped him playing for his country,” explained head coach Kohfeldt on Sunday. An examination on Easter Monday found that the 23-year-old had a muscle injury in his right thigh, so he will have to miss the Hannover 96 game on Friday.

Home debut for Friedl: Augustinsson’s unlucky injury was the chance Marco Friedl needed to make his home debut in the Weser-Stadion. His performance will boost his chances of being selected for the starting XI to face Hannover. He played 65 minutes as wing-back head coach Florian Kohfeldt praised his solid performance. “Marco is also slightly battered from the international break. He came on from the bench and played well,” said Kohfeldt about the Austrian, who would “keep his cool.” “We shouldn’t forget his age. Without a doubt, he has incredible potential.” Augustinsson’s recovery time should give Friedl enough time to feature again for the Green-Whites against Hannover 96.

Club record equalled: Hannover, Stuttgart, Mainz, Hoffenheim, Hertha BSC, Wolfsburg, Hamburg, Köln and now Frankfurt. All of these teams have left the Weser-Stadion winless in their most recent visits. Bremen’s home ground has now really returned to its fortress status and this success is largely down to the style of head coach Florian Kohfeldt. “We want to win every game and we want to improve every aspect of our game,” he made his aims clear after the game against Frankfurt. The Green-Whites’ coach remains unbeaten in nine home games since taking the position after Easter Sunday’s 2-1 win against Frankfurt and equalled the club record in doing so. The current series draws equal with those of Sepp Piontek in 1971 and Otto Rehhagel in 1981.
