New yet well established: Thomas Delaney has been trusted to wear the captain’s armband. “It feels totally natural,” he says. The Dane could take to the field as captain in his first competitive match for Werder on Saturday after just eight months at SVW. He will, in all probability, replace Zlatko Junuzovic and Niklas Moisander who are both currently sidelined due to injury. “I’m very proud of my progress here. It’s an honour for me,” says Delaney. At Copenhagen, the midfielder was named as team captain at only 22 years old and donned the captain’s armband in both the Champions League and Europa League. It’s a role he takes in his stride. “I’ve always been your captain,” joked Delaney recently in a YouTube video with ex-Copenhagen and now-Werder teammate Ludwig Augustinsson at the training camp. That is true for Werder’s opening Pokal match at least.

Inauguration of the “green promenade”: With its location, the Weserstadion is unique but it also needs special care. The flood defence system has been in place since December. 6,000m2 of lawn was seeded, 80 trees replanted and over 1,400 new climbing plants were left to cover and absorb walls, making it somewhat of a “local recreational area”, explained Martin Günthner, senator for economy, work and ports, at the opening on Thursday. Werder’s president and chief executive Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald took part along with Heinz-Günther Zobel, chief executive of Weser-Stadion GmbH.

Kiwi ambassador: Wynton Rufer celebrated the 25th anniversary of winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup along with his former teammates a few days ago. Now the New Zealander is an ambassador for the DFL (German Football League). As a member of the DFL’s “Legends Network”, the Oceania Footballer of the Century is trusted with making sure that the Bundesliga continues to catch on in his homeland. WERDER.DE wishes you success with your new challenge, Kiwi!
