The Werder youngster’s walk near the team hotel in Leverkusen will remain etched on his memory for years to come. Around three hours before Wednesday’s game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the Green-Whites went for their traditional walk out in the fresh air near the team’s hotel. And for the first time, Werder youth product Ole Käuper was with the squad. The 20-year-old had only found out about his call up to the first team squad a day before and what head coach Florian Kohfeldt told Käuper during the walk in the woods was probably something he only hoped for in his wildest dreams. Kohfeldt took the midfielder aside and said the words which would make his childhood dream a reality – “Ole come over here for a second, you’re going to start tonight,” the Werder boss said. WERDER.DE spoke to the Bremen-born youngster about how his debut went and what his teammates said to him after the game.

“When the boss told me I was going to start, it was a brilliant moment. I felt a bit nervous but I had worked so hard for this moment for years. So the excitement took over a bit,” Käuper recalls the time, gleaming. On the way to the stadium, the 20-year-old then switched his focus to the match. “The first priority for me was to help the team and I just thought, you have to fight, fight and keep fighting.”

After that came the warm-up in a Bundesliga stadium against an opponent with numerous high-quality players in their ranks. Suddenly the Habenhausen boy was in the thick of a top-flight match. That can obviously be quite intimidating but Käuper’s teammates were extremely sympathetic and they gave him words of encouragement. “Everyone from the team came over and said that I just needed to give it my all. They said if you make a mistake don’t worry, as long as you continue to work back and work hard,” Käuper explained.

Head coach Kohfeldt has followed the youngster’s progress over the years. He was an important figure in building up the youngster’s courage on the pitch, but most importantly, he placed confidence in Käuper. “I was never nervous about Ole starting for us. I’m totally convinced by his capabilities. I’m sure he’ll establish himself in the Bundesliga,” explained Kohfeldt following the game.

After 12 years at Werder, 57 games in the third division and 18 at various youth levels for the German national team, the time was right for Käuper to make his Bundesliga debut. “It was a pretty cool moment. The atmosphere of a Bundesliga match, so many fans in the stadium – what a feeling.” Käuper played 74 minutes on his debut, showing real energy in his performance, but he also recognised the step up from the third to the top division. “You need to be so much quicker, you have far less time to think before passing on the ball. It’s a big change.” The midfielder looks back at a positive first appearance. “I can’t be completely satisfied because of the result, but it was a solid debut on a personal level. There were a few moments where I could have done things better, but I will work on it.”

His teammates also had good things to say about the youngster’s performance. “I think he did well today. He was calm on the ball and got out of tricky situations on the field. He’s lacking in experience, but that’s completely normal,” said Max Kruse. Thomas Delaney was positive about what his teammate had to offer. “There are definitely easier games to make your debut in. We more experienced players didn’t put in our greatest performance today and that made things harder for Ole.” Max Eggestein, who played with Käuper with the U23s, would like to see Ole back on the pitch: “He was calm on the ball and got his head up well.” Head coach Florian Kohfeldt echoed his players. “Ole was solid today. He can build on this.”

It remains unclear when Käuper will have a role this weekend. “Of course, I hope to be in the team to play Mainz, but we also have a huge game against Unterharchingen with the U23s on the weekend and I will give everything in that match if I’m not in the squad to play Mainz.” Käuper’s first Bundesliga match may very well change hands, too. “It would be a nice present for my younger brother,” he said. Not just Käuper’s younger brother, but also the rest of his family, were really proud with the young man’s debut. Hopefully, there’ll be a lot more to come.
