It’s the long awaited victory. The Green-Whites have won for the first time since the first round of the DFB-Pokal in August. At the full-time whistle, there was an outpouring of joy and relief around the Weserstadion. And despite this, the players who had just beaten Hoffenheim 1-0 at home remained focused. Since on Sunday, Werder have an important game in the league at home against FC Augsburg. “We really needed the win, but it’s not a weight off of our shoulder. We don’t want to get carried away with the win and we need to carry on concentrating,” Max Kruse said.

WERDER.DE put together the reaction from an intense and exciting evening of football.

On the way the game played out:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We wanted to be compact from the start and tighten up the gaps. We fought for each other. Everyone put in 110% and it paid off today. At the end we were delighted. Hoffenheim have a lot of individual quality and are really athletic. They are always a threat so we had to stay alert throughout. We held firm and got the luck we deserved.”

Max Kruse: “We gave it our all from the off and were very aggressive. I have to say that the fans spurred us on for the whole game today. On the bench in the first half, we said that the support was amazing and it continued throughout. It was important for me personally to play for half an hour and get some more match practice.”

Ludwig Augustinsson: “It was a brilliant fighting performance from us for the full 90 minutes. It wasn’t the prettiest game of football but we won and that’s all that matters. We didn’t stop running all evening and we finally got the goal we had been waiting for. The win is really good for us. We want to build on it on Sunday and keep up that fighting spirit.”

Philipp Bargfrede: “It is a great, positive feeling. It is important that we finally got a win. It is good for us. We are not going to celebrate this evening though; instead we are going to switch our focus back to preparing for Sunday, so that we can get our first league win.”

Ishak Belfodil: “It’s been a long time since we last won a match. I’m just happy that it finally worked out today. I hope and believe that this win will give the team the self-confidence we need to push on. I hope we can celebrate many more great moments like this as a team.”

Alexander Nouri: “It was a great performance from the whole team today. Everyone fought for one another and we played with belief and a clear plan. We knew how strong Hoffenheim were going to be and that they would have lots of possession. We wanted to close down the space and when we got the ball back, push forward quickly. In the end we got the goal and the win and it is deserved for the huge effort we put in. We can enjoy the moment today but tomorrow the focus will be on Augsburg. We need to show our spirit in that game once again.”

On advancing to the next round:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The win is a great feeling. The team, the coaching staff, the whole club and I all are buzzing because the fans can go back home tonight feeling happy. The result shows me also that if you believe in yourself, you always have a chance.”

Max Kruse: “We can use this game as a benchmark for the next few weeks, not just because of the result but also the manner in which we won the game. We need to fight like that in the league and that will bring us points. We would’ve liked to celebrate the result with the fans but we still haven’t won a game in the league so it would’ve been inappropriate to do that today."

On Jiri Pavlenka's performance:

Alexander Nouri: “Jiri has been in fantastic form for weeks now. He showed that once again today.”

Max Kruse: “You could see today why we signed him. It wasn’t easy for him in the first few weeks in a completely new league. I’m really happy for him that he’s playing so well.”

On the winner:

Ishak Belfodil: “It was a great feeling but the goal came quite early on so I didn’t celebrate too much. I wanted to stay focused and help the team. When the referee blew for full-time, it was such a relief. I hope that now everything falls into place.”
