Happy with the point but disappointed to not get all three. That was the way Werder’s vice captain described his feelings after the game. “It was important for us to get points on the board here,” the Danish international said after the 1-1 draw in Berlin. The Dane’s strike was Werder’s first goal in the Bundesliga this season. Werder’s head coach Alexander Nouri agreed with the captain: “It was good to score our first goal and to get our first points. It was important for our self-confidence.” Despite this, the frustration of the fact that the Green-Whites couldn’t get all three points against Hertha was clear to see.

WERDER.DE summarises all the post-match reaction.

On the way the game played out

Thomas Delaney: “A point is alright. The whole game was so end-to-end. Hertha had two chances, we had a few good passages of play. We have to take the point and move on. But I am a bit disappointed because we wanted to win here today,”

Maximilian Eggestein: “You can’t compare this game to the other two we’ve played. Today we had a lot more possession and we controlled the game more. It worked better for us, controlling the game, our movement was better and we created chances – for instance Kainzi’s chance or all of the corners we had.  Hertha didn’t have a chance until their goal. We were a bit unsettled by that. But the point is a fair one.”

Florian Kainz: “We pressed from the off much better and had lots more goalscoring opportunities than in the last game. That was good. We could’ve gone into the lead but we could also have conceded late on in the game. It was a deserved draw and one which we can be satisfied with.”

Alexander Nouri: “We had a good shape in the first half and we were confident in our gameplan. We didn’t make it count and then Hertha’s first chance went in. The fact we let them in to score like that was frustrating. The second half was more even with chances for both sides. A draw is a fair result.”

On Thomas Delaney's goal:

Thomas Delaney: “I met the ball well. It was a great goal and I’m really happy with the way I took it. The chance after the goal, when I had that opportunity to score the header, was annoying. I expect more from myself in those situations.”

Florian Kainz: “Thomas has a lot of self-confidence at the moment, you can see that on the pitch and in the dressing room. He pushes us, gives us a positive energy and is a great leader. The goal was brilliantly-taken.”

Alexander Nouri: “Thomas is in great form at the moment and he topped off his great performance with the goal. I’m really happy for him.”

Frank Baumann: “He is showing the qualities he has and how dangerous he is in front of goal. It is important for our strikers that there is also a goal threat from midfield and it takes a bit of pressure off the attackers. Thomas is playing really well. He is crucial for our style of play.”

On the table after three games:

Frank Baumann: “We obviously aren’t where we want to be in the table but we’ve played really well in all three games so far. We could’ve got points from all of them and we could’ve got three points today. But we know that that’s not enough and that we have to work hard for points in the Bundesliga.”

Alexander Nouri: “You need to remember that we have played against three teams who are competing in European competitions this year. Today we played against a Europa League side that are very good at home and we came away with a point, which means we’re on the board for the season. The league is so tight and so all the little details make such a difference between winning and losing. And these little details are what we work on week in, week out."

On Bibiana Steinhaus' first game:

Florian Kainz: “She did really well. I can only congratulate her on her first game.”

Max Kruse: “She has constantly put in good performances recent years and she has proved that you can’t differentiate based on gender. Today not everything was perfect but I think that you’ve got to stick with her.”

Frank Baumann: “Overall, she did well. In the first half, she rightly played advantage for Hertha but she might’ve played it in the second half for us. During the second period, there were the penalty incidents which she handled in a good fashion.”
