In the dying moments of the match, Maximilian Egggestein must have thought he’d just won it, and it would have been a well-deserved victory, before Hertha sickeningly managed to clear his shot off the line. Consequently there was real frustration and disappointment when the game ended 0-0. A draw that in no way reflected the balance of play.

WERDER.DE summarised the quotes from the Green-Whites.

On the way the game played out:

Florian Kohfeldt: “I think that we played well again today. We were dominant, and created some real gilt-edged chances. I cannot blame the players for the fact that we missed these chances, however. They had approached the opportunities with conviction, although you could always say that a header should have been better placed, or that cutting inside might have been a better choice than taking a shot. The bottom line is that we faced an opponent today who defended fiercely, and against whom it is not easy to create chances. So it’s a point that we will have to take.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “In the first half we perhaps lacked a bit of urgency when we had the goal in our sights. But after that we kept pushing and kept fighting and created several opportunities for ourselves. I think Hertha just came here to get a point and break up our game.”

Jerome Gondorf: “I think we fought well today. We all made good runs and worked for each other. And we played good football. Hertha just sat back and defended today in order to disrupt our game. It’s frustrating that they managed to do that.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “After the disallowed goal, it was hard for us to pull together. It was a frustrating situation for all of us. We were really unlucky today, we were clearly the better side. We could’ve won it in the final minutes and the ball went past the ‘keeper but it stayed out.”

Niklas Moisander: “It was a tight game. We scored a goal early on but it was ruled out. We played well today and were the dominant team. A point is better than no points but we need to be winning these sorts of games at home.”

Max Kruse: “We created a lot of chances. The boss set us out well. We did almost everything but score.”

On missing out on the win:

Florian Kohfeldt: “We are really disappointed and no one is patting each other on the back in the dressing room because we played well. we had a lot of chances but didn’t score so it’s just immensely frustrating. We are in the middle of a relegation battle and we need the points. We can be happy later on to have gotten this point because there are games when teams counter and score and you leave with nothing. But at the end of the day the point compared to the performance and looking at the table is just not enough.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We played well again, had a lot of chances and now we are here once again without the three points. It’s the same old story. Perhaps we weren’t clinical enough but it is hard to say straight after the game. The point just isn’t good enough.”

Jerome Gondorf: “It’s hard to sum it up really. I think we didn’t get the rub of the green today because normally one of the chances we had would’ve gone in.”

Maximilian Eggestein: "We didn’t get the result that our performance deserved. We had the opportunities, but we have to capitalise on them. At the end of the day, we managed to get a point, but we wanted all three. In the situation we find ourselves in, we need to pick up wins. At first glance, this game has done nothing to boost our confidence, but if you look a little more closely at what we did well, we can take some positives from this game."

Niklas Moisander: “We’re disappointed about the result today. We have to win these type of games.”

Max Kruse: “We can’t hang our heads completely today. We were just lacking that little bit of quality today. It was another good performance, but at the end of it all we didn’t get the ball in the net.”

On the VAR:

Florian Kohfeldt: “I’ve already given my feelings on it, so I won’t say anything further. In the lead up to goals, possession tends to change quite a lot. The most important thing to me is that there is consistency in how the game is officiated.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: Honestly, I think it’s a joke. It takes away the emotion from the game, and the decisions could really go either way. I don’t understand why the goal was disallowed. In one game the video assistant is called upon, in another it’s not. The system has to be improved.”

Jerome Gondorf: “It’s got nothing to do with football. It just takes away from the enjoyment of the game. Whether it’s the players, the fans in the stadium or at home, it’s frustrating when you’re celebrating one second and then you’re not the next.

On the upcoming game against Schalke:

Florian Kohfeldt: “We’ll start our recovery tomorrow and then fully shift our focus to Schalke on Tuesday. We showed today that we have the quality to come away with something from tomorrow’s game. So we’re not going there to simply take part, we’re going there to win.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “Our mental strength is being tested right now. It’s a tough pill to swallow when you play well week in, week out, but you don’t win. I think we have to quality to beat a side like Schalke though.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “If we continue to play like we did today and also like we did last week, we will come away with three points.”

Max Kruse: “It won’t get any easier for us. We have to start winning games. We will do all we can to do so against Schalke.”
