17 shots on target. No goals. And so the home match against Freiburg ended in a 0-0 draw. None of the Green-Whites could hide their disappointment at the result. Despite the huge effort from the players, Werder couldn’t come out with the win. The main reason for that was the finishing. For Florian Kainz, the reason is obvious, “We need to shoot more and fully concentrate. We know that we are not doing enough to trouble the opposition’s goal at the moment.” Alexander Nouri also bemoaned Werder’s finishing in the second half. “We had eight clear chances, which we should’ve converted. One of them should’ve gone in,” Nouri said.

WERDER.DE summarises the quotes after a third draw of the season.

On the way the game played out:

Fin Bartels: “We are disappointed and frustrated. The point just isn’t enough. We wanted to win, everyone could see that but Freiburg put in the miles in the first half and made our lives difficult. Before the break, Freiburg had the more clear-cut chances but afterwards, we were the team with the opportunities.”

Alexander Nouri: “We made too many mistakes when we had the ball in the first half, in terms of our passing and controlling the ball. We should’ve been more relaxed and confident on the ball. That stopped us from getting into our rhythm. We put more pressure on in the second 45 and created lots of chances. We just needed to put the ball away.”

Frank Baumann: “It’s obvious that after not winning in five matches, it is going to be hard to be confident going into a match and today’s game wasn’t going to be one for the neutrals. We didn’t play brilliantly but we didn’t make any mistakes. Freiburg are one of the most hard-running sides in the league and even though we were coming off the back of a midweek game, we kept up with them. The tiredness meant a few misplaced passes were bound to happen. In the second half we played much better but we were too timid in front of goal.”

Niklas Moisander: “Freiburg ran a lot more than us in the first half, that wasn’t good. We worked harder in the second period and got into the game a bit more. That meant we were able to created chances and it is just frustrating that we couldn’t make the most of them.”

On the current situation:

Fin Bartels: “We need to stop over thinking in the crucial moments. That is much harder when you don’t have as much self-confidence. But we need to keep on believing in ourselves and give it our all in the Nordderby. We need to play from the first minute to the last in the same way that we’ve played the second halves against Wolfsburg and Freiburg.”

Frank Baumann: “We can cope with the pressure. Unfortunately we are familiar with these sorts of moments from previous years. We’ve had poor starts to the season on other occasions. Now we need to go into the next game with courage and confidence.”

Niklas Moisander: “We obviously aren’t happy with our start or with the game today. A point isn’t enough. But I believe in the team. Last season, we showed what we are made of. We will turn it around this season again and get points on the board.”

Florian Kainz: “We are aware of the situation we are in and we want to put everything into getting our first win as quickly as possible. Every game in the Bundesliga is tight. We need to start getting a reward for our efforts.”

On the goal drought:

Alexander Nouri: “We need to convert our chances. We need a win to relieve the pressure and to find our self-confidence in front of goal once again. We just have to make our chances count.”

Niklas Moisander: “It is hard to put a finger on why nothing is going right for us at the moment. Ishak is helping a lot and he came close a lot today.”

Florian Kainz: "We need to shoot more and concentrate properly. We are at least aware of the reasons why we are not scoring."

On next week's Nordderby:

Alexander Nouri: “It will be a great game, one which we’re looking forward to and which we’ll prepare hard for. It will be a special game.”

Frank Baumann: “We can’t wait for the Nordderby. It’s really important to both us and the fans and we want to get the three points.”

Niklas Moisander: “It is a really big game which can change our whole season.”

Florian Kainz: “I am very optimistic that we can get the win next week.”
