We had a chance it and we took it! After the hard-to-take last-minute equaliser in the league at the weekend, the Green-Whites gave their fans a win to celebrate to end the year on a high. “It was really important to end the first half of the season on a positive note. The relief around the team is huge. Now we can relax for a week or two on our holidays,” Florian Kainz said. None of the Green-Whites have much to celebrate from the second half of 2017 but reaching the quarter finals of the cup is a great way to end the year, especially for the loyal SVW supporters. “The fans have stood by us the whole time during the first half of this season, even when it hasn’t gone our way. We can only give our thanks to them with this win and wish them all a happy Christmas,” the goalscorer said.

WERDER.DE heard from some of the “Cupfighters” and put together the most important quotes from the evening.

On advancing to the next round:

Florian Kainz: “We played really well for the first 25 minutes but we relaxed a bit too much. We were better again in the second half and pressed more. It was a good performance overall and I think we deserved to win.”

Milos Veljkovic: “It is a really important win, especially after the Mainz game. We had the chance to give the fans something to cheer about and we took it. That’s important for us mentally.”

Philipp Bargfrede: “It was a really good reaction from the Mainz game today. We were on it from the first minute and we held on to the lead this time. I said before the game that I was happy that we had another chance today to go into the break on a high. And I am really happy we’re in the quarter finals.”

Ishak Belfodil: “Werder have a lot of history in the DFB-Pokal. Reaching the quarter finals is a present for all the fans. The relief after the victory is huge. I am happy that I could contribute to us going through with the goal and it makes the victory that bit sweeter.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “We started the game perfectly. We were the better team for most of the game and we didn’t take quite a few of our chances. And towards the end we were in a similar situation to the one on Saturday and that shouldn’t have been the case. But today we held on and it is really important irrelevant of the competition. The fans now have that to celebrate but we need to stay focused and can’t get carried away. We are still in the relegation places and we need to prepare well for the second half of the season. It is a great feeling however to be in the hat for the next round.”

Frank Baumann: “The win feels really good, the team stuck to their task and stood firm at tough points in the game. Now we can hopefully take this momentum with us for the second half of the season.”

On the controversial goal to make it 3-1:

Milos Veljkovic: “I was down the other end of the pitch and didn’t properly see the situation. I don’t think Jerome touched it so I think it should’ve stood.”

Florian Kainz: “In the heat of the moment, I couldn’t properly tell so I don’t know if he actually touched the ball. There’s not much more I can say on the matter.”

Frank Baumann: “The goal to make it 3-1 is definitely a controversial topic. We were a bit lucky that the referee decided not to give the offside decision. Despite that during the game I was confident that we would get the win.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “I can understand why they are annoyed and I would’ve probably been frustrated if I was in their shoes. But in my eyes that wasn’t the decisive part of the game – we had a few chances before that which we didn’t take. We deserved to win.”

Philipp Bargfrede: “I screamed at Jerome from behind to not touch the ball and he obviously listened to the boss.”

Guido Winkmann: “From my position, I could see that Jerome Gondorf was close to the ball but that he didn’t touch it. So it wasn’t enough for him to be in play. I didn’t say anyone who was interfering with the play. That is why I gave the goal. I thought it was a normal goal to give.”

On the threat of the equaliser:

Milos Veljkovic: “When you concede such a silly goal in the previous game in stoppage time, it does play on your mind especially as a centre back. We weren’t scared but a bit of anxiousness just crept in. It was good that we stayed focused until the final whistle.”

Ishak Belfodil: “After they got the goal to make it 2-1, you could feel that worry that it would be like the Mainz game. But we kept on working and stopped that scenario from happening again and we wanted to build on our lead.”
