A game with few highlights for the Werder players in what was a battle of attrition between the two sides in Freiburg. The players and coach give their assessment of what was a disappointing night in the Schwarzwald-Stadion. The Green-Whites battled well in the second half but their mistakes in the first half and inability to create clear-cut chances leave them ruing the missed opportunity they had.
WERDER.DE caught up with the players after their frustrating defeat away to Freiburg and collected the best of the quotes.
Florian Kainz: “We are massively disappointed because we didn't play as well as we had wanted to out on the pitch today. As we expected, we had the majority of the possession but just didn’t create the chances. In the first half we didn’t show any of our quality even if the second half was a bit better.”
Milos Veljkovic: “The defeat is hard to take. We tried everything but Freiburg sat deep and kept us out. The first half really wasn’t a good performance but we showed a lot more in the second half, playing better football and creating more chances."
Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a tough game. We lost today but we didn’t play like ourselves. The team gave it their all but we lacked that final pass. We didn’t manage to show our quality against a clever, compact opponent. Losing is a part of the game but the way we lost today bothers me.”
Max Kruse: “We didn’t play well today. The first half was truly abysmal, we didn’t push up well enough and made mistakes. In the second half we attacked higher and did a bit better but we didn’t create enough chances. Today felt like a backwards step; we didn’t get the victory and now they moved five points clear of us.”
Florian Kohfeldt: “Of course there are a couple of situations that we can be critical about but that shouldn’t be the thing to take away. At the end of the day we just didn’t play well enough.”
Max Kruse: “For me it was a clear penalty when I went to ground towards the end and it has to be given. In my opinion, that’s the only decision you can give.”
Florian Kohfeldt: “We will look back at today’s game and give it our all right from the off next weekend.”
Max Kruse: “Of course we will work on all the things that didn’t come off today and then next week we will look to take a big step towards safety.”
