If you looked at the faces of the Green-Whites after the final whistle, you would’ve seen how painful Frankfurt’s goal from Sebastian Haller just before the end of the game was. The Werder faces were blank and disbelieving since the team could’ve and perhaps should have taken at least a point from the game. Werder reacted well to going behind, put in their all, had some good chances but had to watch as Eintracht celebrated at the end. The travelling fans showed their immense support once again after the goal went in and cheered and applauded the team after the full-time whistle. The disappointment after the bitter defeat was clear to see in the post-match interviews.

WERDER.DE summarised the quotes after the last-minute defeat.

On the way the game played out:

Florian Kohfeldt: “The team did really well in the first half. After Frankfurt’s wonder goal, we did well to come back and created lots of goalscoring opportunities. We should’ve gone into the break in the lead. Eintracht had more possession in the second 45 and we couldn’t close the gaps as well as in the first half. The late goal hurts. The team have a lot of character and I’m convinced that we will find a way to get out of the rut that we are in.”

Frank Baumann: “The team showed the necessary reaction today after the Augsburg game last week. It was a really good performance for the vast majority of the game, we were proactive, had a clear plan and had lots of good chances to get at least a draw. Unfortunately we couldn’t manage it today. It proved true again today that you need a bit of luck on your side. We didn’t get that with our chances unfortunately.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “It’s really frustrating that we’re standing here discussing a defeat after that 90 minutes. We were really committed, played with courage, had good periods of the game and created lots of chances to score, especially towards the end of the first half. We should’ve taken the lead in that period. But at the end of the day, all that counts is the result and yet we’re leaving here empty-handed.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It is a really bitter defeat. I had the feeling during the game today that we could come away with a victory. But we didn’t put away three good chances before the break. And to concede a goal like that in the dying minutes just shouldn’t happen.”

Max Kruse: “ From my point of view, there were a lot of positive signs today but it wasn’t enough. We wanted to win and we couldn’t manage it. Whether it was a good game of football or not doesn’t bother me – in our situation it isn’t about playing nice football, it’s only about points. We need to take a long hard look at ourselves after today.”

Niklas Moisander: “It is really disappointing. It was a tidy performance from us, we were aggressive, played good balls when we had possession and showed the character that the team possesses. That’s why it is so painful to be on the losing side today.”

On the added impetus from the new coaching team:

Frank Baumann: “In the three days he has had, Florian has done a good job. He has worked on the tactics and tried to get the players playing with self-confidence again whilst developing clear ideas of how he wants them to play. He will take charge of training at the start of next week. We will take a few more days to look over the coaches that are available and have discussions. I don’t know how long it will take.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “The situation is hard for everyone, including the coaching staff. But Flo and his team have done a good job and prepared us for today’s game really well. We have take it game by game now.”

Max Kruse: “Every coach has his own philosophy. We spoke a lot about tactics this week and so there were a few changes tactically in the game today. The coaching staff have brought in a new incentive but at the end of the day, the players need to turn things round and get results.”
