SV Werder Bremen are disappointed that the city of Bremen and the Weserstadion is not being considered as a host city for the German EURO 2024 bid. “Bremen submitted a strong application but it has unfortunately not been accepted. We are convinced that Bremen, with its special footballing atmosphere, would have added a distinctive character to the German bid. This city and region lives for football and we would’ve loved to have shown our love for the game to Europe and so we are extremely disappointed,” Werder’s president and chief executive Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald said on Friday afternoon.

Earlier on Friday, the DFB (German football association) announced the ten host cities which they included in their proposal to host the European Championships in 2024. 14 cities applied to be included in Germany’s bid. The cities chosen were Köln, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Dortmund, Berlin, Leipzig, Hamburg, Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart and München. The cities that missed out were Mönchengladbach, Hannover, Nuremberg and Bremen.

Despite the disappointment, Werder also respects the DFB’s decision and congratulates the successful applicants. “The selection would have been very tough as all the applications were of a very high standard. Without doubt, Germany will be applying with 10 brilliant host cities,” Dr. Hess-Grunewald said, whose thanks went to the Bremen team, who had been putting together the application in recent months.
