It was a freezing cold Saturday afternoon at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, but Werder’s head coach Florian Kohfeldt spoke extremely warmly of his side after the game. He was delighted with his team’s performance. His team had to deal with three setbacks during the game – the injuries of Fin Bartels and captain Zlatko Junuzovic as well as the equaliser just after the break. “The boys dealt with everything that was thrown at them today. That shows the character of this team,” the Werder head coach said after the game.

WERDER.DE summarised the post-match reaction from all the Green-Whites after a brilliant win in Dortmund.

On the way the game played out:

Philipp Bargfrede: “We carried out the boss’s game plan really well. We were organised, compact and didn’t give away many chances, particularly in the first half. Obviously Dortmund had more of the ball and increased the pressure after the break, we expected that though. We stood up to them well. And to come back from the unlucky goal we conceded was great. We definitely deserved to win.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “We came here to win. We did that, even though we did get a tad lucky with that Dortmund chance. We knew that Dortmund were on a bad run and we wanted to use that to our advantage.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “It was a really intense game but it was a lot of fun. The system we played was good and we were really courageous. We obviously knew how strong Dortmund would be in attack, if we let them into the game. We also knew that they are a bit susceptible in defence. Therefore we wanted to break quickly and drive into the space. We did that well but we could have been a bit more calm on the counter to properly make the most of them. But I didn’t think at any point today that we would concede another goal. And differently to in previous games, we were able to play the game out and hold onto the win.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “The first half was really good and we remained organised in the second. We were set out to deal with every situation really well today. We knew that BVB weren’t on great form and that they might be tired after their game during the week. The fact that the home fans were booing and didn’t get behind their team after we went into the lead played into our hands, to be honest.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The boys did brilliantly to follow the game plan and they all supported each other. Some stuff went against us today with the two injuries and the equaliser after the break but the team pulled together to fight back constantly. That shows the character of this team. The boys carried out the game plan to the letter in the first half so they prevented Dortmund from having many chances. After the break we reacted to the Dortmund pressure really well. I am really happy with the performance.”

Frank Baumann: “The whole week of training leading up to the game was very good. We rarely let BVB have space today and we dealt with Dortmund’s pressing game really well. They did still have a few big chances – especially just before we took the lead again. We were frustrated about that.”

On what the win means:

Philipp Bargfrede: „It’s another step on a long road, but it is a really important step. I hope that this win gives us the confidence for the difficult away game in Leverkusen. We showed in Leipzig and today that we can hold our own against tough opposition away from home. To win today gives us a lot of self-belief for the tough task on Wednesday.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It is a great feeling and a really important win, we need the points. But the win today doesn’t feel different to a win in any other game.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “Of course you can’t assume that you are going to get a win in Dortmund. So it is a big three points. In terms of the way the game went you can’t say we didn’t deserve it though.”

Jerome Gondorf: “We want to be out of the relegation zone at Christmas, that is the objective and so we need to keep picking up points. We want to get something from the game in Leverkusen too.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It has been a great afternoon but there’s no reason to celebrate. We are still low down in the table. Leverkusen won and Mainz got a draw in Leipzig so they will both be really tough games. We will prepare properly for them and we have already begun the recovery sessions today. Tomorrow we will work individually and on Monday, we will start preparing for the Leverkusen game.”

Frank Baumann: “We were obviously all delighted at the final whistle about the win. But one win isn’t enough. We want to continue picking up points before Christmas.”

On Maximilian Eggestein’s worldie:

Philipp Bargfrede: “It was an amazing goal, I’m really happy for him and I’m sure he’ll enjoy watching it back.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “I am really happy that I was able to help my team with the goal. I would rather have scored in front of our own fans but it was still a great feeling to score.”

On Philipp Bargfrede’s position:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “He was a proper sweeper today, like Beckenbauer (laughs). He played extremely well and he was a crucial factor to our solidity at the back.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “Bargi is so valuable to us with his physical presence and his ability on the ball. He was so influential for us today.”

Frank Baumann: “Lamine Sané had a bit of a knock and has been ill since yesterday. He could have started today in a three-man defence. But the solution of putting Bargi in there was not a bad one at all. He can play that position with his experience and quality reall well, he also played there against Bayern once. His position in the tactical plan was really important, both for building attacks and for winning the ball back.”
