SV Werder have drawn VfR Wormatia Worms in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.  The draw took place last night at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. Palina Rojinski drew the Green-Whites’ name alongside the Regionalliga club from Rheinland-Pfalz.

The contest will be staged between Friday  17th – Monday 20th August 2018. The exact details of all 32 fixtures will be decided the week after next. The DFB says the process will take ten to twelve days. The amateur team has the home advantage in the first round, so the game will be played in Worms, about 40km north of Mainz.

Reactions to the draw

Frank Baumann: “We are the clear favourites against Wormatia Worms and will take the match very seriously. We want to build on our great history in the DFB-Pokal and overcome this obstacle. I am sure that none of us underestimate the team. This match is very important for us to kick off the competitive season well.

Florian Kohfeldt: “We’re looking forward to the test. Wormatia Worms is new territory for SV Werder, so we have to prepare meticulously. We want to have a good run in the Pokal and will take this first challenge very seriously.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “The first round of the DFB-Pokal is always a unique affair, whoever you play. The lower division clubs give it everything and force the Bundesliga sides to pull out all the stops. I’m really looking forward to the game. I’ve never been to Worms before and I want to ensure we advance to the next round.”
