Few can deny that the yesterday’s Nordderby was a spectacle that will go down in the history books for its beautiful football. But only one thing counts after the 108th fixture between SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV: the three points.

WERDER.DE rounds up all the key quotes following yesterday’s dramatic win.

On the Nordderby:

Niklas Moisander: "It was a difficult match. HSV defended well, very deep and very compact. We couldn’t find any space to pass. But we always believed in the win and in the end deserved the three points."

Max Kruse: "That definitely wasn’t the best game from a footballing perspective, but in a derby all that counts are the three points, which stay in Bremen today. HSV defended deep and gave little away. We weren’t able to play the ball in space. It worked in our favour that HSV pushed higher up in the second half."

Florian Kohfeldt: "It was a very intense match, with lots of running and lots challenges. HSV defended with passion, but as the game went on, we gained more control, won the ball back more and gave away very little on the break. Of course the goal came late, but overall we deserved the win. We made everything that we have been building towards in recent weeks count today. A derby win is always special."

Maximilian Eggestein: "It wasn’t a very good match in the first half, it’s was quite disjointed. We were trying too hard to force the goal. It’s always different in the derby, something quite special. In the second half we played to our strengths and had enough chances to win the match. It was important to stay patient. We would have all preferred for it not to be so tense. It’s positive to get another win in the bag following a disappointing result in Freiburg. The derby is always volatile, HSV did well today. It was an important win, but we’re not safe yet."

Zlatko Junuzovic: "We knew it would be a difficult game because of the tension and the situation in the table. You could feel the derby atmosphere all week, but in the game it was quite fractured. We didn’t start too well, we weren’t clever enough. That definitely wasn’t our best performance, but we managed to grind out the win despite that. We achieved our goal and won. Derby wins are very special."

Frank Baumann: "The match was as expected. We knew that HSV defend well, they showed that against BVB and Leipzig. That wasn’t our best performance out there today, but we deserved to win."

On our table position:

Niklas Moisander: "Those were very important points, but we’re staying realising. We are still far away from our goal. The emotions after a game like that are always high, we can enjoy them for a day or two but then we need to focus. Friday we have another game and we want to pick up more points."

Zlatko Junuzovic: "It’s an important step, but we still have work to do. We have the points and have extended our lead over HSV, but we want to climb higher."

Maximilian Eggestein: "The win shouldn’t give us too much security, as if we lose next week and Wolfsburg and Mainz win, we’re back in 16th..."

On the winning goal:

Max Kruse: "We were just happy that the ball somehow went over the line. We persevered, maybe it was offside, but the goal was given and we can only be happy about that."

Zlatko Junuzovic: "I exploded on the inside. But there were still a few nervy minutes left to play and we knew we had to stay focused."

Ishak Belfodil: "It’s completely irrelevant who got the final touch, the important thing is that we got the three points and I’m happy that I could contribute to this important win!  The feeling was of pure joy. The whole team worked for that win. It was a victory for the whole city."

Felix Zwayer (referee): "We watched it over again after the match once more and it’s clear to see that the player wasn’t in an offside position. For that reason it was a legitimate goal in my eyes."
