SV Werder have bolstered their attacking options by signing Ishak Belfodil. The 25-year-old has signed for the Green-Whites with immediate effect from Belgian first division side Standard Liege on a one-year loan basis. An option to buy is also included in the deal. Frank Baumann, Werder's sporting director, announced the deal on Thursday afternoon shortly before the transfer window closed.

“Ishak is a talented striker with a big physical presence. He is the perfect type of striker that we wanted to bring in. Therefore we are really happy that he gives us another strong option up front for this season,” Baumann said about the player, who has won 14 caps for the Algerian national side.

Belfodil, who will wear the number 29 shirt, is looking forward to the new challenge: “Werder is a huge club with lots of tradition and amazing fans. I am really excited for the season ahead and I can’t wait to play in the Bundesliga.”

Ishak Belfodil already has a lot of experience in European football. In total, the forward, born in Mostaganem in Algeria, has made 89 appearances in the Serie A, featured 28 times in the Jupiler-League-Pro and has played 10 times in Ligue 1. During his youth career, Belfodil moved to Olympique Lyon and went through the ranks there before playing for Bologna, Parma and Inter Milan in the Serie A. Last season the 6ft3 attacker scored 11 goals in 25 games for Standard Liege and made six assists.
