For a long time it looked like Werder would be able to take a well-fought point against Bayern: The Green-Whites fought for every yard, rarely gave away the ball cheaply and pushed the record champions all the way. However a double from Robert Lewandowski snuffed out the hope of  the first point of the season in the space of two minutes. “I am very disappointed with the result,” Ludwig Augustinsson admitted after the game. The whole team had been confident going into the game. “But unfortunately our performance came to nothing in the end,” the Swede said.

WERDER.DE was in the Weser-Stadion mixed zone after the game and here is a summary of the Green-Whites’ reaction from a disappointing day:

On the way the game played out:

Alexander Nouri: "I’m happy with how it went today. We played well, didn’t allow many chances and we kept to our game plan. But I would’ve liked our transition play to have been better. Obviously we are all disappointed because we all thought we could take something from the game. We wanted to give the fans something to celebrate."

Frank Baumann: “FC Bayern had more of the possession and dominated as expected but we defended really compactly and didn’t give much away. If you want to take something from a game against Bayern, everything has to come together. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for us today but we will try our best next time to get our revenge.”

Max Kruse: “We played really well defensively today. In 90 minutes, you can’t stop every chance that Bayern get. We weren’t alert enough in the key moments and the Bayern players, with all the quality they have, took advantage of us taking our eyes off the ball and won the game.”

Fin Bartels: “We didn’t give too much away today, as is often the case against Bayern. Unfortunately we couldn’t convert our counter attacks into goals. Also too often we made the wrong decision under pressure. Unfortunately we weren’t able to steer the game in our favour. You could see that we fought with all our might but in the end we were just lacking that finish in the final third. We’ve come away from the game empty-handed and that’s really frustrating for us.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “We played against a really strong team today. We need to try and keep our concentration levels high for 90 minutes and be more effective in the opposition half. Bayern showed us how to do that today and were ruthless at two moments today.”

Milos Veljkovic: “We should’ve been more efficient today. We needed to take advantage of the few chances that we got.”

Thomas Delaney: “We were brilliant for 70 minutes today. We tried lots of different things to take the game to Bayern but we weren’t aggressive enough in my opinion. Now it’s about carrying on working and doing all we can to improve for the next game.”

On the balance between defence and attack

Alexander Nouri: "The goals will come in the next few games; I’m absolutely convinced of that. We will remain patient and work hard on the basics, to convert our transitional play into goals and to find a balance. But we are on the right track.”

Max Kruse: "We're all happy with the system but we need to score goals in the next few games which will lead to better results. You don't get many chances against such high quality opposition. Nevertheless, we had opportunities which we have to take in the future."

On the start of the Bundesliga season

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "Obviously, it's not great to start the season with two defeats. However, the situation at the moment doesn't bother me too much as it's still very early in the season."

Alexander Nouri: "They've been two very different games. We've played against two solid teams and the manner in which we played was quite promising. We will keep working as hard as we can."

On the upcoming international break

Milos Veljkovic: "Preferably I'd like to play a Bundesliga game next week. Today, we did a lot of the basics right. If we keep working hard and have a bit of luck on our side, we'll eventually get it right."

Fin Bartels: "We can take lots of positives from both losses in terms of the manner in which we've played. Defensively, we're clearly more solid than previously and we'll continue to be compact in the upcoming matches."
