All or nothing! A thrilling finale awaits Ludwig Augustinsson and Sweden in Group F as three sides will battle for a place in the last 16. Today at 16:00 CEST, the Swedes face Mexico. Meanwhile Germany kick off against South Korea at the same time. “We are in control of our fate and could achieve a massive triumph for our country. Anything is possible”, said Augustinsson in an interview with WERDER.DE. A victory would secure Sweden’s spot in the last 16. A different result might need you to dig out your calculator!

The final matchday of the group phase could hardly be more excitingly poised. The Scandinavians currently lie in third place with three points, behind Mexico and Germany. However, Ludwig Augustinsson and Co. are equal on points and goals with die Mannschaft. Should both teams lose 1-0, it will go down to fair play points and if finally the drawing of lots as the last resort. However, Ludde isn’t interested: “Our aim has always been to beat Mexico and subsequently qualify. We have focussed on our side of the draw, virtually since the situation was clear to us.” The Swedes are as confident as before; the defeat to Germany did not affect the result needed against Mexico.

Mexico, who bowled over the World Champions, pose a stern test. “El Tri” as the team is known, have made the perfect start at the tournament. “Mexico have a very strong team, stronger than we initially thought”, admitted Augustinsson, “they put out a very good side at the Confederations Cup”. The Mexicans have won both their group games, granted - narrowly. Ludde continued, “They will be difficult to play against, but there are no easy games at the World Cup.”

The Scandinavians have shown that they too are no pushovers. They began with a breezy 1-0 victory over South Korea. Then they kept Germany at bay for the majority of the game, leading 1-0 in the first half. The Germans only wrestled away the points in the last minute of injury time through Toni Kroos’ sensational match-winner. “We were absolutely gutted after the final whistle. We fought for 90 minutes, defended incessantly in the second half and worked hard to take something away from the match”, recounts the 24-year-old. “Germany were even down to ten men and we were so close to banking that extremely important point. Then came that free kick...”.

Our self confidence is high and our self-belief, strong
Ludwig Augustinsson on the final group game against Mexico

But are their heads hanging low? Absolutely not! Coach Janne Andersson has been a motivating source of inspiration, reminding the team of their many successes in the recent past. “Our self confidence is high and our self-belief strong. We beat Italy in the playoffs, we beat France in qualifying. We can do it. I think that we’re good enough to beat Mexico and book our place in the knockout phase”, said Augustinsson.

Back to the mathematics: A win against Mexico would see them through, regardless of the score. A draw would only be enough if Germany themselves draw against South Korea and have a worse goal difference. Even if Sweden lost to Mexico, they could still go through if die Mannschaft were defeated by the Koreans heavily enough to give Sweden a superior goal difference. All loud and clear?
