Head coach Viktor Skripnik has cancelled the team’s day off in this new week’s training schedule after the home defeat to FC Augsburg. But for Skripnik this move should not be seen as a punishment, but rather as a signal that the team wants to make the most of every minute they have in the next few days. “We’ve now got the everyone together and can train as a group with the exception of those with injuries. We therefore want to use every opportunity we have whilst the entire squad is together before the match against Mönchengladbach and to be fully prepared for the match on Saturday evening,” explained the Werder coach.

Fritz, Gnabry and the rest of the team started Monday morning with some recovery work. Fin Bartels only trained individually while Luca Caldirola missed the session due to injury. Izet Hajrovic was also among those who found themselves on the bench against Augsburg, all of whom completed a full session of training. The 25-year-old featured in a competitive match for SVW for the first time in almost 16 months.

The Bosnian was brought into the squad in place of new signing Florian Kainz. “We have huge competition for places in this position and the performances in training over the last few weeks were crucial,” said Skripnik, justifying his decision. Hajrovic and Sambou Yatabaré provided two further options on the wing alongside Fin Bartels and Serge Gnabry, who started the match against FC Augsburg out wide. “It would have made no sense to have Flo on the bench as a third wide player,” explained Skripnik.
