The Bundesliga is only one matchday old but the new season has already been interrupted by the international break. This interruption however, has given Bremen time to prepare for the important first home game of the season against FC Augsburg (Sunday, 11th September, 15:30 CEST). One part of this preparation is a friendly against Kickers Emden at the Ostfriesland-Stadion, which will be used to get the players minutes under their belts. The game kicks off today (Friday, 2nd August) at 19.00 CEST.

A large portion of the squad will not make the trip as many of them are away on international duty, meaning that players who haven’t been getting as much game time will get the chance to make an appearance.

Strong start to the season with Urgestein Menzel

Kickers Emden have had a solid start to the season, securing two wins and a draw in the Landesliga before their first loss of the season to SC Melle (5-1). Their last league match against VfL Wildeshausen had to be abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch at Ostfriesen, however, the ground should once again be in good condition on Friday.

Kickers have former Werder player Manuel Menzel in their ranks. The 29-year-old defender moved from Eintrach Frankfurt’s youth side in the 2004/05 season to the Weser but only stayed for a year in the U19s before moving to the Emden - he’s now in his 12th season at the club.

Routine win two years ago

Two years ago Werder played a pre-season friendly against Kickers Emden. In that game, the underdogs put on a good performance and gave as good as they got in the first half. Werder’s two goal lead, provided by Junuzovic and Petersen was wiped out by half time. In the second half however, the Green-Whites turned on the style, scoring four more goals through Elia (2), Bartels and Garcia.
