After their friendly against 1860 Munich, Werder will go up against English second-division side Huddersfield town, in their second match in Zillertal on Tuesday (18:00 CEST). The club are preparing for the upcoming season in Austria, just like SVW. Sporting director, Frank Baumann, is expecting tough opposition: "We have chosen opponents, who we think will test us. Huddersfield are an ambitious club with many players who used to play in Germany. We expect the boys to put a lot of effort into the game – the result is less important", says Baumann.

Last season, Huddersfield finished in 19th place in the English second division. German-American David Wagner has been head coach of the three-time English champions (1923-1926) since November 2015. From 2011 to 2015, the man from Hesse was U23s head coach at Borussia Dortmund. The 44-year-old was in Germany for a while, and played for clubs like Schalke 04, Mainz 05 and Eintracht Frankfurt. Wagner won the 1997 UEFA Cup with the Royal-Blues, and he made eight appearances for the USA national team.

German mentality at the "Terriers"

The club, based around 56 kilometres north-east of Manchester, achieved promotion to the Football League Championship in 2012. The “Terriers” have strengthened their squad for the new season with a few new signings. Most recently, they signed Welsh international goalkeeper Danny Ward from Liverpool. There are also three Germans among these new acquisitions. In Christoph Schindler from 1860 Munich, Michael Hefele from Dynamo Dresden and Chris Löwe from FC Kaiserslautern, Huddersfield’s defence will have a very German feel next season. Furthermore, on-loan Elias Kachunga from FC Ingolstadt will strengthen their attacking line. In the 20-year-old Slovenian Jon Gorenc Stanković and the German-Croatian Ivan Paurevic, there are two former players from the Borussia Dortmund second team in David Wagner’s squad.

The club, who reside in the English county of West Yorkshire, are in the final part of their pre-season. The new season begins for Huddersfield Town on Saturday, 6th August at 16:00 CEST, when the White-Blues will welcome Brentford to the John Smith’s Stadium. After the friendly against Werder Bremen, the 1922 FA Cup winners will end their pre-season with a friendly against FC Ingolstadt.
