The training camp in Zillertal is slowly getting under way. Werder have been in Austria since Thursday, and their first friendly is on Saturday (15:00 CEST). In 1860 Munich, SVW are up against their toughest opponents yet of this pre-season. Head coach Viktor Skripnik wants to find out a bit more about his team against the second-division side.

The friendly against head coach Kosta Runjaic’s side will mean a reunion with several old friends, as three former Green-Whites are currently under contract with 1860.

Thomas Eichin worked as sporting director for Werder for more than three years, before they parted ways at the end of the season. The former Bundesliga player wasn’t without a club for long though. In June of this year, the Munich club announced that Eichin would be taking over the post of sporting director at the second-division outfit.

In Levent Aycicek and Marnon Busch, there are also two players on loan from the Green-Whites in 1860’s squad. Aycicek also played the second half of last season with the “Löwen”, making 14 appearances (one goal, one assist). The loan spell was extended for a year. 21-year-old full-back Marnon Busch played for the Werder U23s last season. During the 2016/17 season, the talented youngster will gather some match practice in the second Bundesliga.

Third clash with 1860 in Zillertal

Werder versus 1860 – This encounter will take place in Zillertal on Saturday for the third time. In 2013, Munich fought back after going 1-0 down through an Aaron Hunt goal to get themselves a draw. Last year, the Green-Whites defeated 1860 3-1, with Franco di Santo, Maximilian Eggestein and Florian Grillitsch sealing the comfortable victory.

The two teams have met 42 times in competitive matches, although the last was a fair while back: In the double-winning season 2003/04, Werder won 2-0 away from home towards the end of the season. Ivan Klasnic and Angelos Charisteas with the goals to push the Green-Whites closer to the Championship.
