It’s the start of the new season! After long, intensive preparations at three different training camps, the new season finally begins on Sunday. Werder will travel to Lotte in Westphalia for the first round of the DFB Cup where the team will want to celebrate their first victory of the new season against newly-promoted third-division side Lotte.  Despite the difference between the two teams, Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann is aware of the threat of the opposition. “There is a very positive atmosphere at Lotte since their promotion to the third division. We can’t afford to be careless and we have to go into the match fully focused.”

Why should Werder be aware of Lotte's momentum going into the third DFB Cup match of the club’s history? Why is everybody talking about the importance of an away goal for Werder and which player beats Claudio Pizarro in terms of most DFB Cup appearances? WERDER.DE has summed up all the facts below.

Did you know that...

...all good things come in threes? Third-division side Lotte have drawn a Bundesliga team for all three of their DFB Cup appearances. Lotte failed to score against both Bochum in 2009 (1-0 loss) and Leverkusen in 2015 (3-0 loss). Fritz, Wiedwald & Co. will be aiming to make it three defeats from three for the hosts on Sunday.

...Werder have a good away goal record in the DFB Cup? In their last 14 DFB Cup matches, SVW have scored 13 away goals. Until Werder were knocked out of the cup in the semi-final by Bayern last season (2-0), the team had scored in 28 consecutive away matches in the DFB Cup, a record!

...Claudio Pizarro brings a tremendous amount of cup experience to the team? ‘Piza’ has played the second highest number of DFB Cup games of all current players (53). Philipp Lahm is the only player to have played in more. However, Pizarro will not be able to add to his appearances against Lotte due to injury. Incidentally, it is a Werder legend that holds the record number of DFB Cup appearances. Mirko Votava played in 79 DFB Cup games in his career. A great achievement!

...Lotte had their best ever season last year? Lotte topped the table in the Regionalliga West with 83 points. They won the league by 15 points over second-placed Borussia Mönchengladbach II.

...Werder have already played Lotte this season? Although the Werder first team is yet to play Lotte, the U23s lost to the promoted Lotte team on the first day of the third-division campaign. “Although it sounds like Lotte dominated, the result does not reflect the whole match,” said Leon Guwara. “The whole team and staff were there in the stadium to get an idea of how Lotte play.”

...apart from the match between Lotte and the U23s, the two teams have never played each other before? The match on Sunday will be the first ever competitive meeting between Lotte and Werder. Until this season, there had always been two leagues between the teams. The hosts were still in the Bezirksliga as recently as 1988.

...Werder are still the second-most successful team in DFB Cup history? Werder have lifted the cup six times in the history of the competition. Schalke are the third-most successful team having won the competition five times. Bayern have won the competition 18 times out of 21 final appearances.

...the referee will be Christian Dietz? The 32-year-old from Kronach has officiated five DFB Cup and 32 second-division games in his career. Steffen Mix and Lothar Ostheimer will be his assistants for this match.

...there will be a Snapchat story from Werder for the game?! Werder have had a Snapchat account since the first training session in early July and there will be lots of exclusive snaps from the sidelines during the match! Follow us: werdersnaps!
