Werder have hardly had time to digest their bitter defeat to 1. FSV Mainz 05 as their fifth Bundesliga matchday tie against VfL Wolfsburg is this Saturday (18.30 CEST) - just three days after their midweek game against Mainz. However, the team won’t give up. Fritz, Gnabry and Co. want to take as many positives out of Wednesday’s game as possible to finally get their first win of the season. “You have to be able to deal with defeats like these and get stronger from them,” said Nouri. “The team has to stand back up, that’s important,” commented captain Clemens Fritz while Florian Grillitsch said wisely, you have to “take the positives from the game but also analyse the negatives.”

Find out below which run the Green-Whites ended in their last duel with Wolfsburg, why everything points to a goal-fest and which Wolfsburg newcomer doesn’t have very happy memories of the Weser-Stadion.

Did you know...

... this season, like Werder, the Wolves haven’t been excelling in front of goal. VfL have taken 67 shots so far this campaign but have only scored three goals. Also, the team from Lower Saxony have missed six of their seven big chances.

... the last Saturday evening game at the Weser-Stadion was a while ago. Two years ago to be precise, on the 8th of November, 2014 - the match ended in a 2-0 victory for the Green-Whites against VfB Stuttgart.

... Wolfsburg’s top scorer doesn’t have good memories of his last game in Bremen. Daniel Divadi, who has scored two of Wolfsburg’s three goals this season, was wearing a VfB Stuttgart shirt in his last outing at the Weser-Stadion. In that spectacular game, Divadi levelled the scores at 1-1 but in the second half had to be subbed off due to a injury. The game finished 6-2 to Werder and VfB were relegated that season.

... Wolfsburg aren’t in great form. After a 2-0 win against FC Augsburg on the opening day, the Wolves haven’t managed to win any of their other Bundesliga games. In their last game they succumbed to Dortmund 5-1 at home.

... despite both of the teams’ goal scoring record this season, this fixture usually provides goals. 25 goals have been scored at the Weser-Stadion in the last five games between these teams – that’s an average of five goals a game! In that time, Werder have been victorious on two occasions and Wolfsburg three.

... Werder ended a long losing streak against Wolfsburg in their last encounter. On the 30th matchday of last season, the Green-Whites managed to put an end to a six game losing run against the Wolves with a 3-2 win. This victory was also a milestone for Werder on their way to retaining their topflight status. And did you also know,

... in this game, the #Greenwhitewonderwall was born. Despite the tough situation Werder were in, the team bus was received by a sea of Werder fans and chants from the faithful. In the following home games, the support grew even more... and the rest is history.

... Denzin Aytekin will be the game’s referee. The 38 year old business economist from Nuremberg has officiated 18 Werder matches in his career, the most recent being the spectacular final game of last season against Eintracht Frankfurt. In total, Aytekin has overseen 116 games in the Bundesliga and 61 in the 2. Bundesliga. His assistants on Saturday will be Christian Dietz and Eduard Beitinger while the fourth official is Marcel Pelgrim.
